I had one of those today.

I bought 2 of your item at the store for x amount. I'm so glad I didn't buy yours. That's almost half the cost. You need to lower your price to x amount. I replied with a break down of ebay and paypal fees and the cost of shipping supplies. Then I mentioned that not everyone wants to go to a store and shop. I thanked them for their email and blocked them. I get a little grumpy sometimes.

You are entirely justified in being grumpy!  My mind went to, I don't recall asking for your pricing info, welcome to my BBL, but I know you can't say that!

Great professional response, especially mentioning not everyone wants to go to a store and shop.  Of course paying for the convenience of not having to go is in there!

Actually I find it hard to understand why someone would even think it is proper to send you an email like that!  You bought elsewhere, fine, why do you think I need to hear about it?

Yes, it is very annoying!  But, we just have to stay professional and thank them for their offer and let them know we are unable to sell at that price.

And we have the option to BLOCK THEM if we wish to keep from hearing from them ever again.

I know what goes through my head to say , but I also know what I write. Thank you but we don't have any items in our store that have a best offer.

Actually, it use to be a serious violation to make such an offer when the BO option wasn't present.  It was considered an attempt to engage in an off-eBay transaction.

However, eBay has done a 180 recently and now it is permitted.  In fact, there is much discussion about eBay now wanting to include the BO option in auction style listings.

There are numerous threads running currently about the BO in auctions thing, so it doesn't make sense to expound on the subject here. However, with regard to making offers through messaging when the the BO option hasn't been included in the listing, my policy is to decline such offers and place those making them on my BBL.  So despite eBay's apparent 180 degree turn on the subject, one should still think twice about doing it.  If I block people for doing it, there are probably others that do as well.

By the way, making an offer on an auction, even if the option is there, is a bit ridiculous, in my opinion.  Placing a bid is making an offer to buy at the amount of the bid so what is the purpose?

Oh! to those saying they can get it cheaper elsewhere I say, "Why haven't you bought it yet?"

You know, Dennis, in reading your post and thinking how drastic a reversal that was, I wonder if possibly that is what contributed to the newly increased sensitivity of the bots to contact into.  Perhaps opening the floodgates to any offer on any item brought with it unintended and unanticipated consequences in that it facilitated more off ebay transactions?  Or at least seemed to encourage them?  Possibly making offers on everything is just a hop, skip, and a jump away from saying and it is you do this in another way (cough, cough) you can save as well>  I don't know but it is an interesting thought.

Re: this would be nice..

I have been known to lose it on occasion in a reply but not so much in the past few years, since blocked buyers can easily circumvent that list, cause other chaos, etc, etc.

My favorite moment of just total fedupness was the buyer whining about my St. John item (verrrrry in demand that year and sold out almost immediately) priced higher than the one on the website.   I replied that the 1 or 2 left on the website were size Petite and, as far as I knew, I had the last new with tags XL left in the universe.   I might have mentioned something about letting me know how that Petite looked on her.  Of course, I had no Best Offer on the listing.

I've had a rash of "will you take less?" messages lately; must be the season.  I'm very polite in replying that at this time my price is firm; I don't say "geez, are you one of the 8 watchers?"  (I'm 99% sure the watchers are buyers, not resellers; too long to explain.)

I received two will-you-take-less from the same person, after saying no the first time.  The second one was  a form letter, because she also listed other items she wanted, and both were strangely worded about shipping.   Something like "out the door for $42"; does that mean free shipping, only going to pay $42?

Also just had one last week that to which I replied nope, and then she bought the widget a day or two later at my firm price.  Yes, I worry about those ...

I tell them "thank you very much for your interest But I'm not able to sell this item at that price at this time, have a nice day 🙂 "   to be Honest I kinda forgot about the Blocking option, I didn't think the Blocking option worked for messaging tho? Smiley Indifferent

It is my understanding that you can block messages from someone who is not engaged in a transaction with you (i.e., anyone who has not actually purchased one of your items).

Re: this would be nice..

You have the option to block messages from people in your block list. I think it's in communication preferences. I hear that it takes a few weeks to kick in, and you may have to archive any messages to/from that individual in order for it to actually block communication from them.

Re: this would be nice..

They cannot penalize a person for trying to get something cheaper. Sometimes these same people then go on to purchase the item at full price, so be careful with the blocking on them. If they offer you a riduculously low offer then you just ignore the message, or you can respond. Thanks for contacting us, our prices are firm. Thanks for the offer. The low ballers then go away on their own, to the bottom of the bucket prices.
