okay, we have all been there..the Buyer thats messages you making an offer on a listing thats not listed as a "Best offer" item  & telling you they can buy it cheaper at Blah Blah Blah, eBay should make & enforce a Rule that penalizes these Annoying Buyers.

Don't forget to block. They will buy it and then insist on a partial payment to get it to what they believe is the rightful price.

Except, it's not really their fault, but instead ebays fault for adding "Best Offer" to auctions and for having "Best Offer" as a default on buy-it-now fixed price listings using the Basic LIsting tool.

So ebay would have to penalize themselves for being annoying... and perhaps they should.

In the past ebay penalized buyers who asked for best offers from sellers who did not offer it.

Now they encourage it.

Yes, it is very annoying!  But, we just have to stay professional and thank them for their offer and let them know we are unable to sell at that price. 

And we have the option to BLOCK THEM if we wish to keep from hearing from them ever again.

You know the funniest thing about those offers...  is CLEARLY if it's still available at the other place, and they've seen it for sale, they would purchase it.  Or I know I would.

Problem usually is that the item is out of stock (or OOS in their size, color, etc), which is why they are coming here to look in the first place!

So, that's called basic supply & demand 101.  But they want me to sell them the item for the same price they found it for, now that it's OOS, and the demand for the item is higher? Sure. Not.  Sorry, I don't price match.

I have had the occasional customer out of these best offer askers, but that is really few and far between. It an id has a pattern of asking for a best offer with a really ridiculous price, the are blocked immediately without a response. That way I stay nice and calm.

Yes, dramatic change there.

It was a violation to offer a seller less on an item that did not have Best Offer on it; it was said that if the Seller did not have Best Offer of the listing, that meant they were not interested in receiving offers.

That's completely turned around in the last couple of years.  I think this change came in response to buyers who just did it anyway and really didn't care.

If they can buy it cheaper at BLAH BLAH BLAH, then that is where they should buy it, then!  Perhaps a polite response, thanking them for their interest, and I am happy you found a better price and I totally understand that you will be buying there, would be appropriate, if you care to respond at all.

ebay used to have a rule that said that buyers can't make offers unless BO was on the listing, now ebay is so desperate for sales, they'll let them do anything. 

If the buyermade a comment about being able to buy it anywhere cheaper - I'd just tell them to go ahead and do it.  And if they had more, I might buy them from the buyer if the price was right.....but since the bots will violate a seller for anything, I just block the buyer and maybe answer NO.

I had one of those today.

I bought 2 of your item at the store for x amount. I'm so glad I didn't buy yours. That's almost half the cost. You need to lower your price to x amount. I replied with a break down of ebay and paypal fees and the cost of shipping supplies. Then I mentioned that not everyone wants to go to a store and shop. I thanked them for their email and blocked them. I get a little grumpy sometimes.

Actually, it use to be a serious violation to make such an offer when the BO option wasn't present.  It was considered an attempt to engage in an off-eBay transaction.

However, eBay has done a 180 recently and now it is permitted.  In fact, there is much discussion about eBay now wanting to include the BO option in auction style listings.

There are numerous threads running currently about the BO in auctions thing, so it doesn't make sense to expound on the subject here. However, with regard to making offers through messaging when the the BO option hasn't been included in the listing, my policy is to decline such offers and place those making them on my BBL.  So despite eBay's apparent 180 degree turn on the subject, one should still think twice about doing it.  If I block people for doing it, there are probably others that do as well.

By the way, making an offer on an auction, even if the option is there, is a bit ridiculous, in my opinion.  Placing a bid is making an offer to buy at the amount of the bid so what is the purpose?

Oh! to those saying they can get it cheaper elsewhere I say, "Why haven't you bought it yet?"
