I weathered the fun in 1981 thru 1984 - double digit every thing - unemployment, inflation, interest rates on fixed rate 30 year mortgage, interest rate on a simple passbook savings account 10+% (my 12 y.o. daughter had one) and unemployment compensation $85/week family of 4. Laid off on Dec 16, 1981 , game-fully employed April 1, 1982.
In Jan 1982 it was -26 F with wind chills of -80 to -100 F for one sold week, furnace never shut down - temp inside 56 F heating bill was $650 for the month lived ~50 miles south of Chicago.
