returns are out of control

oh my gosh,,  I have had more return requests in the last two weeks than i've had in the last 4 months!.. this is ridiculous,, this is exactly why I had a restocking fee on remorse returns.  !

I have no problem accepting returns if something doesnt' fit, or the buyer doesn't like it.  However, I did not want to have buyers purchasing things to try on ,, or check it out..!,,  The returns in the last two weeks are all legitimate.  But the reasons for return are ,, i just didn't like the color or bought three dresses and this was not my favorite!

This is exactly what I wanted to avoid.. Buyers starting to expect that they can buy something as a try it option!,, that's not in my business model!  If a buyer wants retail service and otions... (returns , just becuase, etc).. they should have to pay retail!  .. so basically,.. Ive had over a thousand dollars of return requests in the past two weeks!.. High dollar items(as compared to my average inventory item price).

Terapeak is owned by eBay now. You should just have to go to Terapeak.com, and there's an option to login with your eBay account.

ebay bought the site, yes.

While there is a "free trial", it is now a subscribed site

Oh, it was always a subscription before eBay bought it.

But if I go to "Log in", and then hit the "Log in using eBay" button, it allows login.

Maybe this is only available for certain account types? We are an anchor account. But it does allow login.

The announcement was suppose to be rolled out by now,but they've got some bigger headaches with what else they have to announce so they are probably drawing straws to see who folks....

@missjen831 You are correct..  I could change to not include free shipping.   But that ship has sailed, buyers do gravitate towards free shipping these days.  I have built the shipping costs into my price.. However, with return shipping, there is no way to build it into your price , unless you know beforehand that the item will be returned.  Obviously, not every item is returned.  Adding the return shipping price into every listing , in my opinion, punishes buyers who don't return.   Let me be clear, I realize the buyer is absolutely within their right to return an item. I have always accepted returns. I simply am getting fed up with ebay conditioning buyers to expect premium services for cut rate prices..   If  a buyer is the type of buyer that buys 10 things and returns 9.. I don't want that kind of buyer.  Buyers like that look for free shipping and returns...  and that subsection of buyers is not profitable for me at all.

Obviously if a buyer can't figure out that free shipping doesn't mean free,,  it means shipping included .. and someone is paying for it!

We are anchor store as well.  When prompted to login with eBay, however, all it does is log us into eBay itself then error message out.  surprise.

(And before eBay purchased Terapeak, we used it for research without a subscription, so totally confused right now by your saying it was always a sub.)

I'm a bit confused as well. Since I believe 2014 or 2015 we were subscribed to Terapeak. But once eBay bought it, we no longer needed to.

Although the login with eBay is very buggy. Sometimes for us it will freeze for a few minutes and then we come back to the PC and it is logged in.

same here. i am guessing that is their uniform response. im just guessing that they are veering away from smaller sellers and just catering to those who do large numbers.

Returns are out of control - Yes, absoulty.

I too used 10% restocking fee to reduce retruns and overrode it 99% of the time. I only charged the 10% restocking fee once in 8 years.....

All of my issues are with newbies, I had a similar return like yours (a few months back). The buyer wanted a remorse return, and processed it as "Item not working, not as described" intentionally to avoid the 10% restocking fee.

I preemptively called eBay to inform them of this and they said they understood and instantly processed the request in the buyers favor.....

Item retun arrived completly unopened.

Ebay has become ReturnBay™ Half the time I don't even get my item back and they still issue a refund on the bases of a tracking number the seller provides to the same zip. So my guess is they are just putting tracking numbers on enevelopes sent to the local mcdonalds. So they can show delieved to same zipcode.

EBAY IS FOR BUYING SCAMMERS AND BULK CHINESE SELLERS ONLY.  THIS PLACE IS DYING.

This is theft.  eBay will not take action for you so as a Seller you HAVE to take action to protect yourself and your fellow sellers.

Take the tracking number to your Post Office and get a detailed delivery report INCLUDING the gps location of the dropoff.  File Mail Fraud charges for every one of them that is not YOUR address.  File ICD3.gov complaints, File Police reports with your local department and request these be forwarded to the local PD.  Insist on the PD taking the report, they may not want to but that's what they are paid to do.   Take this information back to eBay and appeal the refund and report the buyer.

As an aside, if the actual dropoff location is a business, go there and ask if they have the packages/envelopes. If they do get them and turn them over to the Post Office or Police Department, whichever will take them.

If everyone did this each time they had an obviously fraudulant return the scammers would quickly learn there are consequences.

I think the reasoning to more returns marked as NAD is so that the seller will eventually be required to pay higher Ebay fees due to having too many. Ebay is enourging this probably figuring that the lost of a fee for a single item will be outweighed by the seller having to pay higher fees for everything they sell.

Regarding the new SNAD metric and threat of higher FVFs they should at least eliminate SNADs or ANY reason for a return if Seller's offer Free Returns.  Free Return listings should NOT be counted in any metric against Sellers since they are agreeing up front to accept and pay for a return shipment.

While I do NOT agree with the F.R. offering I am actually testing it on lighter weight items to see if the 15% promised increase in sales is real or not ... I suspect it is not only because where in the world would they get that % having never offered F.R.s before?  I wonder if it came from the same hat that magicians use to pull rabbits from ... I think you can find those on eBay too ...

These metrics get pulled from a different orafice.

I haven't had any returns ever since the free returns came into fruition. Clothing does have a high return rate. Good luck to you.

go read the announcement where they discuss the possible higher fees,, it clearly says, they  May,, raise the fees... do you have a link to another page that says they ARE going to do it.

And I have emails from eBay regarding this that clearly state WILL because of my current "return rate".  Most of those errors will be gone before this is implemented, but for some the message they receive is different from the announcement.

There has always been a section (at least was) of Terapeak that was availabe free to eBay users and you could login via eBay.  All the other features were/are subscription.  I have a basic sub so I can view historical sale prices of collectibles, on eBay I'm limited to 90 days, Terapeak I can go back further, great for seasonal items.

How many times have you heard of someone losing money?  Usually somehow, somewhere along the line they transferred ultimate control of their money to someone else.

In the near future eBay will be collecting your payment & distributing it to you as they see fit.

Hey Lemmings,  how about lets just concentrate on getting the search engine working 1st

before you start starving these poor souls.

Believe me you are not the only one. sometimes i feel like i am getting more returns than actual sale money in my pocket. I have even told buyers to keep items because the cost of shipping to and back is more than the actual sale. It looks like it is something we are going to have to adjust to becuase this clause isnt going anywhere anytime soon. In my personal opinion, if the listing states proper color and measurements and description, buyers should not have to be refunded the initial shipping charge becauase everything in the listing is correct. But...We dont make the rules, we just now have to follow and adjust to them. But yes, extrememely frustrating for sure. Can only try and stay positive...best of luck!
