More and more sellers are writing "Condition is used" and so on in their descriptions when the condition is given automatically at the top of the listing page. Why?? As well as being redundant, it seems to occur in default of any detailed description of the item. I keep coming across things like "Vintage Casio calculator. Condition is used" as if that is somehow helpful or required. It's neither.

Perhaps you're confusing condition and description.
'Used" is a condition not a description.

yes, but there is a section called Condition description....that shows up on non new items.......I think that's what's he's talking about........many sellers just put in "used" instead of a description of the problems/flaws.

Because buyers don't read.
The MBG gives byers all their money back even if you wrote a 12 paragraph story detailing every flaw and the buyer decided to buy it and then open a SNAD.
Ebay caused this mess, ebay can fix it.
My fake SNADs are not nearly as upside down as they used to be. They used to be 5 fake for every 1 real...maybe ebay is generously opting bad buyers out of the MBG.
Whatever is going on I'll take it.

Yes, it is the eBay app that automatically fills in the info, but the full description can be altered or replaced with whatever information is needed.
However if you go on the computer, [using the full website] and revise the listing there are more options, even a box for a better explanation of the condition.
As a seller I have started adding "not new" because items can still be in original packaging but have age or may not function as it should because it has sat on a shelf too long.
Newer buyers might not realize a reseller on eBay is not the same as Amazon.
Buyers on eBay should be told right away that the item is used, or at least not new, or not from the original manufacture.
My opinion is my always my own! Happy selling.

eBay automatically generates the description. If you want to change it then you need to go ahead and make it your own.
