I use anywhere from 1500 to 2500 pixels. My photos need close ups, so I try to make them as clear and concise as I can. What program are you using to insert your photos? I use Adobe myself. Are you using your phone or a laptop/personal computer? There are a lot of good photo apps out there. Surf around and see what you can find.
Happy Snapping!

EBAY policy requires that you must include at least one photo that is 500 pixels on the longest side, but we recommend including more to help increase your chances of a successful sale.

When I need to see how many pixels one of my photos has before uploading it to a listing, this is what I do:
1. Import my photo from my camera to my computer (Windows 10)
2. Edit the photo. Rotate, crop, adjust brightness, etc., and save to a new or existing file
3. Go to the file where the photo was saved on my computer. Right-click on the photo, select Properties from the menu, and then click on the details tab to see the info regarding the pixels.
I think most cameras these days should provide a photo that will meet eBay's requirements. In my experience avoiding cropping the photo too much is a big help.

I don't think i've had a 500 pixle picture since the early 2000's

Even 20-25 years ago only the cheapest things on the market were taking photos lower than 640-480 resolution.

That is what I do too. I also keep my library of photos on my Desk Top by type. I learned to to that long ago when we had an issue many years ago about disappearing pics on some listings. We had to replace them and before I kept them on my computer, I had to recreate them. Drove me nuts. I learned the hard wany and now I keep all my pics on my computer. They are organized and easy for me to find.

I don't know about that. The rule for Ebay pics use to be 500 pixels in one direction or the other and then your pic would be able to be zoomed on the listing. That wasn't 20-25 years ago. I don't remember how long ago it was, but it wasn't back in the beginning.

Back in the beginning a lot of people didn't even HAVE digital cameras. If you had a $900 Nikon you could get 1280×960 which was beeeg. I recall 8 mp memory cards - they filled up right away.
ETA: There was definitely no gradation of cheap to expensive when it came to what was photo'd with what.
I think the zoom photo feature came in what...10 years ago?

thanks for the suggestions but how do you know how many pixels are going to be in a picture and how do you change the picture if it is to small. I am a stupid old man when it come to what a phone will and won;t do thanks

Your question suggests that you are appropriating other peoples images from the internet and not taking your own pictures and editing them.
If they were your intellectual property, your camera would be taking images greater than 500 pixels on the longest side, and your photo editor would tell you what you have edited them to.
So either you are stealing pictures or you do not know how to use your photo editing software,

@kokoek9 Do you have an android or an iPhone. I'm no help with an iPhone but I can help with an android.

@kokoek9 OK, tap the camera icon, then settings icon. Once you have the settings display, you then swipe left or right (just tap over) to go through the available options. There you can select picture size (i.e., mine is 2000 x 3000 mp) or picture quality.
If you're getting little small 500 mp photos or less, your camera setting is probably on lowest quality, but there's also something else: I see that you crop your photos severely, and that will make them a lot smaller - don't crop them so much, it doesn't make the item any easier to see, that's done with good lighting, and it just looks strange with skinny photos and tall photos, etc., in your listings. Try to make them square.
