Hi All,
Question, If you see a seller selling a OOP item, not real rare but somewhat rare and you see the seller sold 2, 4, 6 of these on the listing, and the listings has Great feedback, good photos, and description and so on, is your first though Counterfit/bootleg??? At what number do you start thinking this, even if the seller says it's not? Or do you think it's ok, and would buy from that seller?
I have sold a lot of OOP this way, but started wondering if it's helping or hurting me?
Thanks for your thoughts.
Anna

OOP is also out of print.

I'm a bookseller and from time to time I have lucked into multiple copies of a book I know I can sell easily.
The last score was half a dozen new (remaindered) copies of SpaceshipTitanic by Michael Palin and Douglas Adams.
Not a popular title, British publisher ,circa 1999, only slightly available in Canada, never available in the USA.
And it fits your criterion of " not real rare but somewhat rare ".
Never put down to conspiracy what can be explained by coincidence.
Anything that is mass produced; books, mobile phones, Franklin Mint collectibles, Barbies; is not unique.
Rare is not unique.
And rare is not valuable.
It's a corollary of Micawber's Law.

The asking price would be a big decision if I thought it was counterfeit. Would it be worth the trouble to make a counterfeit of the item ? How much is the seller asking for the item ? How many where made of the item ? Is the artist a well known person ? Just because it is OOP does not mean there wasn't 10,000 or more sold. Most Ebay sellers think their items are like gold so they ask outrageous amounts thinking buyers will bite, especially if they say OOP, RARE, or OOAK. Usually those items sit here on Ebay for years until the seller gives up and removes it. Many will come here saying it is Ebay's fault no one wants it.

Depends what it is, in the case of aftermarket machine parts it is very possible some manufacturer picked up the oop item, as well in some cases sellers can alter present parts to fit the OOP's specification, just an example.

I'd look in the solds, presuming there are any, and see how many OTHER of the same item has sold from other sellers........that might give me an idea of how much market I was "missing" and whether there might be a perception problem........

Thanks for all the thoughts everyone, sorry I did not say what OOP was.
To give a better idea, I'm talking about media - Books, DVDs, CD's, Games
Also, the price is fair, selling for what the item is worth, according to current listings and sold listings.
(*So let's say a few sellers have the same item and everything else about the sellers were about the same -
Feedback,
Long Time Sellers,
Top Rated Sellers,
Free Shipping,
and so on, everything about the same
Do you thing you would rater buy from a seller who only has 1 of the item, or a seller who has 1 of the item, but sold 3 in the past on that listing? )
I guess that is the HEART of the question, Thanks for your thoughts.

I would buy from the one that sold 3..........IF I noticed it, lol.......
Just remember tho.....we aren't average buyers...........

So True, average buyers we are not, good reminder, 🙂 Thanks

I just read this on Google, but not sure it aplys to OOP items?
"With the Out of Stock Inventory Control feature turned on... - Buyers also like to buy from listings with a lot more sales. It shows that the seller has a proven track record of delivering goods to their buyers."

Yea, I guess that would help me know a little more about the "perception" because "perception" is what i'm really looking to find, Thanks

It all depends on the item ...
If a seller says that they have 10 copies of an Out of Print, First Edition, signed by the author in pristine untouched condition ... then I'm going to be a bit skeptical LOL
But if a seller has 10 Dinner Plates in a desirable, rarely listed, HTF pattern ... then no. It just means the seller lucked out and found a good set to purchase 🙂

So true, I know it's hard to have a general answer across the board.
