I just got a message from a buyer interested in 3 auctions I have right now. They said they weren't able to bid due to an unpaid item and could I maybe do something about that. I could see that they tried to bid on one item, but were denied due to too many unpaid items.
I looked at their FB left for others. I would have exempted them but...10 negatives and 3 neutrals with about as many positives. I messaged back and stated that in order to not be able to bid, they have 2 unpaid items and there wasn't anything I could do about that.
Many of the FB were so unfair. Seller wouldn't give me a discount, seller wouldn't combine shipping, seller didn't ship on the 4th of July. All were for the exact items I am selling. Would you have declined and blocked them like I did? I'm thinking of taking the auctions down too.

I'd add them to my block list.

I could use the money, but not the trouble! One of their feedbacks said seller did not answer my message fast enough.

I had that dilemma and gave in because I wanted to be nice. Left me with a negative, luckily I got eBay to remove it, but I wouldn't do it again.
The unpaid part doesn't really matter to me. It's always checking the feedback left for others. I would be fast to block.

Listen to your gut. The unpaid item strikes alone are reason enough to not want to deal with them, but that kind of feedback they have left for others cinches it. By not selling to them, you dodged a bullet. Put them on your blocked buyer list and be done with them.

I wouldn't do it!
It's not a one off when a buyer is blocked for too many UIDs. And when you consider that many sellers don't cancel for non-payment, the number is probably even higher than the 2 in 12 months.

I'm with the others, buyer sounds like trouble.
You checked everything I would have.
Next step is to stop communicating with them and then block.

Thanks for the confirmation. We sellers have so few protections. The unpaid item block did its job. Every time a post comes up about ending feedback because it is outdated, I post to remind sellers that this is a tool we can use to judge someone who wants to make an offer. If their FB left had been great, I probably would have exempted them.

Would have blocked so fast it would even have made my head spin. Would not have even replied to their message.

Just curious: Why does the unpaid part not matter to you?
eBay offers this as a way of protecting yourself as well as other sellers.
When a buyer has racked up two UPI cases in twelve months, sellers can block that buyer for that reason.
Why would you not use one of the few tools you have as a seller?

Yikes! Quite apart from the issue of unpaid items, after seeing a feedback history like that I'd put them on my blocked-bidder list immediately, to make sure they can't bid on my stuff after the unpaid item strikes roll off.

Buyer is a 🤡 clown, you know how we feel about clowns.

I would say...
"Sorry this happened, perhaps you can find the same item from someone else. Have a great day!"
Up to you if you want to block. Sounds like they are already in the blocked arena.

I would keep it short and sweet telling them
it looks like ebay is working as intended
its a little bit snarky but is factual

I would have done exactly what you did.
