First, I would let the customer know what happened (that way they hopefully they won't leave you negative feedback).   You are supposed to cancel order using reason "out of stock" (but be aware that will cause you to get a "penalty" against your account).   Go to ORDERS, ALL ORDERS (select CANCEL) this will automatically refund the customer and return "selling fees" to you.

Go to orders in your sellers hub and click the arrow next to the transaction. Then click cancel order. Then click "Out of Stock." You will get a mark on your seller level.

@superman4u2  before canceling this , have you tried contacting the buyer and asking them if they would like something else at a discount? Also maybe you can find the same item online from another seller , purchase it and send it to your buyer.

By not havig the merchandise you will get a defect that will stay with you for a year ,less if you are a high volume seller

In the future, verify your inventory before you list items.

I would first see if your customer would like something else from your store.

ETA: I'm pretty generous about trading a more expensive item, too.

@superman4u2

I'm sure you already know, if you don't have a designated place to keep your inventory, you need to have one so that your wife knows not to bother the things.

Also, just as a point of information, on your petticoats, it should be "waist", not "waste".

As others have posted, reach out and see if the customer would accept another item. You should reach out to them as quickly as you can to explain what happened, apologize, and try to offer multiple solutions.

Pull up the item under sold items and click cancel order. Select out of stock for the reason.

Go through your listings and make sure there are no other missing items.  Tag all items so others will know not to do that.  It's serious and eBay gets testy about it if happens too much.

Just a little caution.  If the buyer agrees to this, you have given them an easy reason for file for a Request for Return Not as Described.  Now I admit, typically when a buyer is willing to work with you with something like this, IDK that the buyer would be of the mindset to do this to the seller, but it is always a possiblity.

Buying from another seller to ship to your buyer is called Retail Arbitrage and against the rules of Ebay.

You are correct, these are all options the seller can do, but are they good options??  That is for each to decide what is best for them as long as they know what the ramifications can be.

@mam98031 APPARENTLY you missed read my reply to the seller! I said to buy it from another seller I NEVER said to have the other seller ship it !!!!!!

Here so you can review and read the reply again:

"Also maybe you can find the same item online from another seller , purchase it and send it to your buyer."

I done this several times with eBay's Blessing because I made my buyer  happy!

@mam98031  before you say anything about the buyer not getting it in the estimated time , it is a risk you take but worth not having the defect for a YEAR!

I wouldn't call it retail arbitrage in this case, it's more good customer service than anything, that's IF the seller can find another item the same from another seller.
