local pick-up

I keep having the problem of buyers purchasing large over-sized items that are listed specifically for local pick-up, expecting me to ship them, and then expecting me to refund them when they find out the cost of shipping is too high. I have done so many cancellations (and made wrong selection for reason of cancelling order, my mistake)  it affected my seller performance and Ebay pulled my ability to use promoted listings.....How do I keep people from making these purchases? Even with big bold print, its like they don't even bother reading my listing or just ignore it as if it doesn't apply to them.

Are you including "LOCAL PICKUP ONLY" in your Titles?

Buyers don't always read - they're too busy chatting with their friends and not really paying attention.  Besides, why should they?  eBay's got their back!  As do nearly every form of payment except cash.

The title idea will work if the full title shows on their teeny phone screens several down scrolls before they see the Buy It Now button.

Sellers used to be able to add watermarks and other limited text to their images -- adding "Local Pickup Only" across the bottom of the gallery pic (usually first picture) would be a GREAT idea....but it's no longer allowed.

Other than that, just cancel as Buyer Requested (no defect for you) and if eBay asks for comments "not shared with the buyer", let them know that they buyer didn't read and this was a local sale only, not a shipping across the country is fun listing.

It's a hazard of retail sales.  I see it daily in the B&M store we run our online sales out of (back room style) -- shoppers come in, see some furniture pieces they just have to have, and when they are just about to process their credit card, they finally ask "this includes delivery, right?".  To which the answer is "No.  Delivery is available for a fee, within a reasonable distance, and to your ground floor door only.  Just like it says on the signs all thru the furniture section of the store."

Shoppers don't think about things like that.  Sellers do when they are buying -- they are more educated in the entire process than your average shopper.  That's one of the reason I enjoy selling to collectors (who are picky, in general, and usually ask if they want to know something) and to sellers.  Both groups are more aware of the process....and they READ!!  🙂

I haven't seen that stop people, including myself, from occasionally putting notes on gallery photos for a better buyer experience.  IMHO, I'd just do it.

But I agree - people run on assumptions, and what is very familiar to us (shipping methods) is not to them.  A lot of people have really limited life experience, too.

Okay the world is full of illiterate careless entitled dimwits.

But if you refund promptly as "BUYER REQUEST"  you are out a few minutes of your time and that pesky 30c non-refundable fee.

You might try a social media Chat with a trained eBay employee who may have the authority to restore at least your PL, and more importantly lose the restriction that is putting your listings lower in Search.

The phone reps do not work for eBay so don't bother with them. They work for a subcontractor out of Utah.

The social media Chat accounts are covered by trained eBay employees with some authority.
And you get a transcript so you can compare what you heard with what you were told.

When I have an Item that is LOCAL PICKUP ONLY I Do NOT Choose Any Other Shipping Method.

There is NO Option Chosen for Shipping by Any Shipping Service..so no one can Pay and expect a Shipment of any kind...Of course LOCAL PICKUP ONLY is on the TOP LINE with the Item Name..NEVER SELECT any OTHER WAY to SHIP other than LOCAL PICKUP.. when you list that kind of item...

Be alert. YOU have to. Immediately, upon a sale for pick up only, send them a message reminding them it is pick up. If they had overlooked it, offer to cancel and cancel customer request. It's no big deal if done right.
