I sold a discarded library book and the person is wanting the money back is the valid reason.  They said they don't like library books.

Had you disclosed it as a library discard?  I used to sell a lot of books and it's not uncommon for people not to want ex-library books because of possibility of damage. I don't sell them myself because I'd have to go through every page to ensure none are missing or defaced.

An ex-library book should be identified as such.  If that was missing from your listing then the buyer has a valid complaint and there should be no argument about the return.

^^THIS^^

Ex-library is considered a defect and should always be disclosed. If not, the buyer definitely has valid cause for a SNAD.

I agree, though it's actually a condition - I purchase library discards for myself but I know what I'm getting in to because it's disclosed.  Sometimes I think "Ex-Library" and "Book Club Edition" should be moved into "condition" (i.e., "New", "Very Good", etc.)  from the IS's because it's more informative, but then that would open up a bunch of other questions. But absolutely needs to be disclosed.

As an ex-book seller and major book collector I completely agree. There are exceptions, as sometimes the book club edition and/or library book can be a true first edition but those are VERY rare. Most collectors will not touch either one.

Really rare, but believe it or not, I actually DID find an ex-library first edition!  A late 40s hardbound. I could see why after I read the thing - it was awful.  Probably never went even into a second printing. 😬

I actually think it's a good option for item specifics improvement. Just like many categories have a "modified item" item specific and you select yes or no, for books they could have "ex-library copy" or "book club edition" then you select yes or no.

If you think it would be a good item specifics addition you can send the suggestion to sdsupport@ebay.com- I think you're more likely to see a change effected in that way as opposed to a condition change which is why I'm suggesting it. 🙂

There are a couple of book club books that are firsts also, Sci Fi Book Club comes to mind. They had special illustrations just for them.

Should be disclosed - absolutely agree.

Should be a condition - absolutely disagree. Completists who collect an author WANT those book club editions, and they care whether that book club edition is Fine or Poor.

One of the issues this opens up (as I said).

Absolutely library status should be disclosed upfront. I have received many books in the mail that turned out to be x-library and it’s always frustrating when I don’t know that up front.

As a seller I do sometimes sell library editions if the book is rare enough or in bulk lots by the same author. But it’s important to disclose it.

As a former library employee, there are several reasons why sellers should disclose that the book they are selling is a library discard.

Many libraries stamp their books with permanent ink with the name of the library system and sometimes other information, often barcodes are attached as stickers, sometimes theft detection devices are inserted into the spine and some library systems apply a protective coating to paperbacks to add strength and durability.  For some book buyers, these actions deface the book and make it unattractive to them to purchase.

Hope this helps.
