inaccurate or downright false listings

Hi I've been considering starting to sell stuff on Ebay, and I was looking at some listings trying to understand the do's and dont's. I found something I thought a bit disturbing, a lot of listings that, for all in tents and purposes were deliberately deceiving. I was wondering if this was common, because it wasnt just one listing it was a great deal of them. Primarily the ones that were imitations especially in the jewelry section.
I assume its ok to put the listing here since its an open listing anyway, but it says this
2.20Ct Cushion Aquamarine & Diamond Halo Pendant 14K White Gold Over Free Chain

Now honestly this person obviously put free chain after, which is nonsense, with no comma no indication over "belongs" to painfully obvious what that's about. And if that werent bad enouigh its not white gold. In the description it reveals everything yet still says white gold finish then below says .925parts per 1000, no mention of silver which is what .925 means. On top of which its a lab created Aquamarine and I dont believe you can advertise a synthetic as the real thing which I found a great deal of listings doing.
Overall I would call that headline fraud, and I wondered it looks to me like it goes against Ebays listing policy. Dont they do anything about stuff like this? Im sure this effects all peoples sales as it turns people away.

Yes I believe you are referring to the Search and Browse manipulation policy.  That only applies to honest normal people.  The liars and cheats can do as the please with no consequence.

Re: inaccurate or downright false listings

The seller does have sterling silver in the specs, and lab gems are allowed in the fine jewelry category as long as they are set in precious metal, either sterling silver or gold.

Re: inaccurate or downright false listings

If you review the relevant policies and can find a specific policy that is clearly being violated, then by all means you can report the listing.

But as far as "doing anything", eBay is not going to inform you of any decision they make or any actions they take.

After you report the listing you will not hear anything more about it.

Re: inaccurate or downright false listings

I understand what your driving at, still it is search manipulation which is against Ebays policies. And the Federal trade commission has listed that even in your headline it is illegal to use those terms if they are not what is claimed. Even with the caveat info on the next page you cant list an aquamarine as such without the lab created.

Ahh so you know nothing about any action or even no action that may or may not have been taken. How convenient for Ebay. Thanks for responding In thought they were just ignoring me.

Re: inaccurate or downright false listings

As far as listing your own stuff, you've done some research so do the "do's" and don't do the "don'ts".

Correct. And that is a good thing.

If eBay made good samaritans their "partner" and explained everything they were doing, what decisions they reached, and why they reached them ....

... then that would be a goldmine of information for would-be scammers. They would simply pose as a good samaritan, report other sellers' listings, and watch and learn what eBay does and does nto do, and learn how to circumvent it.

The less anyone knows about their process, the more effective it will be.

Re: inaccurate or downright false listings

Many of us sellers are not experts on jewerly or any other collectible for that matter.

We are resellers that buy from estate sales, and we just list these items.

No one can be an expert on everything, and especially collectibles that

could be counterfeit or real, or first pressing  or reprint.

No everyone has the skills to know these things at  a glance.

And some of the counterfeit items are so good that even experts have trouble

telling the difference.

Locally here a pawn shop had what looked exactly like an authentic Gibson Electric guitar,

and later found out it was not legit.  I have seen some of these gibson knock offs and talked

to a guy at a music store and he said they are so good that you would need a legit one next to it

to see the differences....they are that good.
