how to sell old power tools

i am down sizing homes and need to sell my father-in-laws big tools. he was a master carpenter, so you can imagine the quality. mostly dewalt..pro version, and he did improvements on most of them to use his vacuum system. i have tried to do some searches so i have some idea what to price them at, but they are mostly from the 80/90's. can anyone give me an idea where to start searching?

Old power tools you are better off selling locally. There is always a market for this stuff. Ebay will be a pain in the neck.

Agree on this - you'll have no problem selling those locally.  I used to sell tools when I could get them, and some from my dad-in-law.  Good, USA-made tools are in demand.

Re: how to sell old power tools

Think we are all in agreement here..sell locally. Since hubs is the retired journeyman and he is sick in bed I cannot ask him directly but he probably would agree to take about 30%-40 off the original price. DeWalt is a very good power tool maker and you should have no trouble selling them just make sure they work, if they don't then 50-60%. I also believe their battery packs are interchangeable (year to year) Is there a neighbor that could possibly help you price out these tools? Good luck my dear!

For older tools that work, 50%  from new, is a more likely starting point.

@rschissler I guess we forgot to mention that it depends where you live. I'm out West so the Hispanic citizens would pay more for good quality tools than say Florida.

Re: how to sell old power tools

Older power tools are an easy item to move and sell. However you may want to consider using local forums, shipping would kill you on the bigger items, and with used tools there is always a big risk with INAD returns. If any of the tools are battery powered there is also the issues associated with shipping batteries. Using local pickup only would eliminate the shipping cost but probably would not give you that much of an expanded buyer market over simply listing on some local forums and you avoid the fee's.
