got a little snippity yesterday...

So a while back there was a thread about the "meanest thing ever said" to a potential buyer. I didn't reply because I don't think I ever said anything mean to anyone, but I will admit I can be a little impatient when someone just doesn't get it.

Well yesterday I had a mint product sell (from another country), to a guy in Canada. There is no postage for Canada in the listing, but it's not excluded. I expect people to either message for a quote, or buy and accept what I charge.

So the buyer purchases the set, and I quote him the price (which is actually $4 better than Canada Post, because my freight forwarder offers discounted Canadian postage too). He questions the shipping like I might have made a mistake... geez, it's almost 2 pounds, fits into an 8.5" by 11" envelope, and postage is usually around $15 with all the fuel surcharge and taxes, then we have to add what eBay takes, and the fact that it costs a bit for bubble mailer that size (which I don't get at a discount because I have a grand total of 20 in stock at any given time, but I have around 500 #0 mailers coming in at a time).

I don't think I was rude, but definitely a little snippity when I told him that eBay is taking a percentage of what he's paying, plus packing materials and taxes (which I do have to pay for shipping within Canada, the tax rate varies by province).

Well snippity or not, he did pay my shipping without any further protest and he'll be getting his coins tomorrow or Thursday, so I hope he's happy with them when he gets them.

Meh, probably nothing to worry too much about.  I've know a couple of people that I would consider as having the patience of a Saint.  I've also seen them come completely unglued at someone with, what I would consider, little cause.  Perhaps once, maybe twice, each over a period of 40 years.  However, it does happen - and when you least expect it.

Not saying 'NO' doesn't mean 'YES'.

The foolishness of one's actions or words is determined by the number of witnesses.

Perhaps if Brains were described as an APP, many people would use them more often.

I can lose my cool as well when it comes to buyers arguing over prices, shipping, etc. I often will block them before I even respond at all, then tell them to get lost. I'm not here to play games, but rather to sell them.

My usual response is to tell them to "Buy From Someone Else", or Get a job then you can buy what you want without having to beg."

My tolerance only goes so far. I also love how buyers think its free to sell here. I've had buyers complain about shipping their video games in a bubble mailer. What am I supposed to do, pay $10 to ship them their $8 game?

One buyer hurled profanity at me, then called and threatened me with violence. He then got fired by his employer for it, I don't play. People who cause me headaches get them in return.

I speak what's on my mind very directly and to the point... but when it comes to selling, I have my customer service face on and I keep a lot of that under wraps.

A few weeks ago I had a new water heater installed and the guy installing it is telling me the city covers most of the installation but there's a $85 fee I have to cover (because my pipes were not up to code). I said "you're telling me this like it's a lot of money or something". I figured I'm getting a $1200 heater that I'll pay $21 a month for that will be completely under warranty (when the hard water in my city wrecks it in three years), that $85 to update piping is not a big deal. I kind of expected some expenses when I bought this house (an estate sale, sold as is).

My point being, he probably gets tons of people complaining about the fees the city is charging for this stuff, so he's wording it such to get the least resistance so he can just do his job and move on to the next house.

I grew up with a parent that came completely unglued on a regular basis. She told a story about how she got banned from the drug store because she kept bringing her dog there even though it wasn't a service animal. It wasn't the dog that got her banned, but the yelling at the store manager that her dog had a right to be with her at all times, even in a store where food is sold (health violation in Canada).

I don't really have the patience of a saint, but I try very hard with customers since I figure a lot of issues are more due to misunderstanding and poor communication than anything else.

Wait...

your CITY covers most of the installation of water heaters??  Why?

I got shipped around from relative to relative often enough that they were still on their good behavior until I left for the next.   lol.

I would agree how we approach people matters, especially when it comes to our businesses. But I will still block and run the other way if I think a buyer is going to be a problem. I just follow my instincts when it comes to doing business here.

I too was raised by hateful beasts. Has taken me generations to un-learn their cultured responses to everything. Unfortunately, remnants of old do rear their ugly little heads from time and I find myself apologizing. I soooo understand!
