Tax from shipping? I was taxed by have no clue why and for what and at what rate? Federal sales tax is 4% and I am in NY. so please help me figure what ebay sold to me during my buyer’s transaction?
It appears you have been switched to managed payments. If so, seller fees are based on item + sales tax + shipping + $.30 per transaction. The percentage used depends on the category used for the item. Using the collectibles category for an example, the fee is 12.55%.
If you are a top rated seller, you will receive a 10% discount on the fees for item + sales tax + shipping, but will not receive a discount on the $.30 per transaction.
If you wish to see the fee % for all of the different categories, go to the Help & Contact section and type ebay fees, you will see the screenshot below. The first article, Selling Fees, has fee % for all of the categories.
You are not required to purchase your shipping labels at the post office and may purchase them from eBay if you wish, at a discounted rate, which is less than what you will pay at the post office or online through their Click N Ship program.
Personally, I weigh each item I have available, including the shipping box and all packing material and use that exact weight & box dimensions for each individual listing to get an accurate cost of shipping for buyers, regardless of their location. I also do not use USPS Flat Rate shipping as it is more expensive than USPS Priority Mail and First Class Mail. First Class can be used for anything weighing 15.99 oz. or less. If it weighs 1 lb. or over, Priority Mail may be used.

Sales tax is charged by eBay, at the rate of the buyers location, not the rate of the sellers location. If the buyers location has sales tax, it will appear as it did on the example you provided. If not, you will see a $0.00 for sales tax.
