It is not mandatory/required, and buyers can only be given positive, so why does it seem amazing that buyers don't bother?

I wouldn't call it "amazing" but yeah i've noticed the same thing.
I would guesstimate that about 10-20 percent of my customers leave feedback.

True. But when ebay starts bugging buyers for feedback they open pandora box. So i am not sure what is best ebay should or should not remind about feedbacks.

Mine may be at 20% max. I have enough feedback. I don't care if the buyer leaves any.
Seems that "today's buyer" is more likely to leave feedback when upset. No feedback can be a good thing.

I find it normal. I lose no sleep over it.

eBay's going to be doing just that. They announced in the last seller update that they would ramp up feedback by pushing feedback reminders through the app.

Had no idea. Thanks for telling me. I missed on that. Buyers are broke and everything is expensive as heck so I don’t think it is the best time to be doing that.

Me too, especially since eBay's help pages recommend it. I guess not too many buyers read those.
Leaving feedback for sellers | eBay
"Leaving feedback is a great way to rate your buying experience with a seller on eBay. Your feedback is important because it can help other buyers decide whether to buy from the seller. "
