eBay stock to take a huge hit as sellers abandon the site in protest

We have all heard eBay promises and guarantees about how well their latest change is going to work. The real truth is that eBay is going to take a MAJOR HIT on the market as SELLERS abandon the site over protest.

Our companies have been on eBay since the week they started up. We did hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of business and initially loved the eBay and Paypal combination.

Then eBay started to change drastically, always for the worst.

Today Paypal is worth THREE TIMES what eBay is valued at. That will give you an idea about who people like.

I can only say now, after so many years, that I personally HATE eBay and LOVE Paypal.

No, Paypal is NOT going to be available on eBay in the future. The details are becoming clear as we hear the truth from sellers. Sellers are FORCED to give their personal banking info to the foreign company and then loose total control of their money. There is a huge delay before being paid, and no way to find out WHY.

Read the seller feedback. It's ALL NEGATIVE. Oh, and once you sign up for managed payments, you can NEVER opt out or retract. You are forever stuck with it. eBay has removed the contract line that says you can opt out.

Typical for eBay, you have NO OPTIONS. Sign up or close your account(s).

We did the later. We closed ALL of our eBay accounts that have existed since the 90's. Goodbye eBay and good riddance.

eBay stock to take a huge hit as sellers abandon the site in protest

On the whole, I will NOT be saving any money moving to MP.  My payment fees appear to be larger.

I have a PP Micropayments account.  Any sale under $10 costs me less that MP will be.

If I have a sale over that $10, I will break even.

Early on, I asked about the micropayments and the answer I got was "don't worry, managed payments will be less"

eBay would have prevented a lot of the 'I will never use MP' if they had presented a finished product with a complete documentation that was available to everyone, not just those already signed up.   Clear examples of how it works step by step.  Clear examples of reports provided by them and where to find them.  Clear examples of what "reports" you will have to create yourself and how to create them accurately.   At this point, there is absolutely no reason why, if that documentation exists, they could not release it to the general user base.

eBay originally didn't carry the weight of seller distrust.  as the years have gone by, eBay seems to want to carry a heavier load of seller distrust.  No idea why, since it probably would - in the long run - cost them a lot less in time and energy to be more transparent.

You may want to research and think about this. Paypal charges you just like ebay for every sale you make. If you do ebay's managed payments you eliminate the 3rd party = No charges from paypal from each sale means extra money in your pocket. Change is not easy or comfortable at times but I do believe that this managed payment is a good thing. You eliminate an extra charge that Paypal is charging you for each sales transaction. Is not having that extra cash a good thing.

@nowandthenfabrics

Not exactly.  Ebay did not start MP so they could give away the service for free.  You will be paying a fee equal to what PP charges right now.  The difference is you will be paying it to Ebay and not PP.  But you will pay.

There are advantages and disadvantages to MP.  Some sellers may save a little money in MP but it is more likely to be a more neutral experience.  Some things a little higher and other things lower.  Over all a net neutral change as far as fees.

But with MP ALL claims are ran through Ebay.  No more of this PP claims and Ebay claims, they will all go through MP.  That should make things a little easier on us.

The TRS discount will be calculated on the Simplified Fee which means that the discount will apply to shipping FVFs and for payment processing fees.

In MP if you have to file for a cancellation, MP will refund your Simplified Fee.

Sorry, but that is not accurate. While sellers enrolled in MP will no longer be charged payment processing fees by PayPal, eBay's own payment processing system called Managed Payment (MP) WILL charge the sellers for processing the buyers' payment.

For example, in one of the categories I am selling, Jewelry, the current eBay FVF (Final Value Fee) after the sale is 10% on the item price, 10% of the shipping that the buyer paid and because I am still in PayPal at this point, PayPal charges its additional 2.69% fee on the total payment of item price and shipping, the tax paid by buyer AND a one-time 30 cents fee per order.

Come July, if I would want to remain an eBay seller, I would need to pay 12.59% for every sale made in the Jewelry category - including the same percentage of the item price, the shipping paid by buyer, AND the taxes.

So, ebay incorporated a payment processing fee from PayPal and in addition to that, it also charges a 12.59% of the entire tax amount that the buyer pays upon check-out, despite the fact that eBay already receives up to 2% discount from the amount it needs to send off to the respective tax collecting states, for eBay's administrative costs. So, nope, there is no "similarity" between the current system and MP. MP will effectively cost MORE to sellers, and while small sellers may not see a large difference - the higher the number of sales a seller has, the higher that 12.59% FVF on the taxes will be.

@mam98031 The sentence in red is absolutely INCORRECT, sorry. You yourself have stated, on numerous posts before, that eBay's charging at or around 12.59% (or more, depending on category, for example, 13.5% for DVD sales) on the TAX portion of the sale is not making any sense and is unfair. Sellers do not see, process or keep - or forward - the taxes a buyer pays, despite eBay insisting to running it through the sellers' account. They do it solely in order to benefit (profit) from it, and do so despite the fact that they (eBay) already gets a large discount for its "efforts" to process the taxes, from the tax-collecting entities of the states.

Summa summarum: Your sentence, "You will be paying a fee equal to what PP charges right now," does not correctly align with the facts.

Since you do not have a store, in MP your Simplified Fee would be 12.35%, if you had a store your fee would be 11.5%

PP currently charges 2.9% on the total amount of money processed and the 30 cent per transaction fee.

Yes the new fee structure for MP coming in July includes ALL fees.  Both FVF fees and money processing fees all wrapped up in what Ebay is calling a Simplified Fee.

So for example you currently pay the following without a store.

10% FVF on product and shipping.

2.9 % money processing fee

12.9 % total.

In MP you will pay

2.9% money processing fee

9.45% FVF

12.35 % Total

Now it has to be considered that in MP the Simplified Fee is processed on the entire purchase, which does include sales tax.  The small reduction in the overall FVF helps to soften the financial effect this will have on us.  I don't by any stretch of my imagination believe Ebay should be charging a FVF on sales tax, but for now I'll set that aside.

If you are only going to compare a couple listings with these new fees you will NOT get an accurate picture of what the overall affect will be on your account.  You can't.  It isn't even logical.  We have a mixture of sales.  While most have sales tax on them, some don't.

I compared my fees for the month of May.  My comparison was what I currently pay in Ebay vs what I will pay in MP.  For the entire month of May I ended up saving 0.71% overall in fees based on the Simplified Fee structure.  These are US sales, 78% were taxable and 22% were not.

If you want to run with only looking at a couple transaction you will not get an accurate picture of the impact of MP on your account.  Certainly if that is what you choose to do and base your decision on whether you will continue to sell on Ebay, that is absolutely your right to may that decision for yourself.  And I know you have from your other postings.

But I encourage others to do a broader and more detailed evaluation so they have a better picture of the actual impact to them so that they can make an informed decision on whether this move is good or bad from them.  A decision for each of us to make for ourselves.  Just better informed that assumed.

You are more than welcome to look at it in any direction you would like.  It doesn't change a thing.  Math is math.  AS for the highlighted statement, you will not find any of my posts on any thread that says that percentage is accurate.  In fact I've said the exact opposite.  I have no clue where you got that number much less why you keep using it.

So if you want to run with your numbers, the bottom line does NOT change.

Without a store

10% fee in Fashions & Jewelry

2.9% PP fee

12.9 % currently paid in Ebay

Without a store in MP

2.7% Money processing fee

9.65% FVF

12.35% Total fee

Either way, the above numbers or my previous post, the result is the same.  MP overall fees are 0.55% less that is currently being paid.  The thing we have all got to consider with that reduction is that Ebay will be doing the Simplified Fee on the entire amount to include sales tax.  The fee reduction  helps to soften that impact as does a mixture of sales taxable sales and non taxable sales.

The same results in DVD and Books, just different numbers, but the end result is the same.

For non store owners

Currently in Ebay for non store owners

2.9% PP payment processing fee

12% FVF

14.9% total fees

In MP for non store

2.7 % Money processing fees

11.65% FVF

14.35%  Total fees.

That is still a 0.55% reduction in fees when in MP.  That reduction helps to offset the impact that having sales tax having the FVF applied to it.

@mam98031

I am not sure where you are getting these numbers from:

"So for example you currently pay the following without a store.

10% FVF on product and shipping.

2.9 % money processing fee

12.9 % total.

In MP you will pay

2.9% money processing fee

9.45% FVF

12.35 % Total"

I do NOT have a store subscription, and the percentage you keep citing - e.g., 9.45% FVF - is actually 11.5% - for STORE SUBSCRIBERS (and more for those without such subsrciption). Below is the information for store subscribers (and please note, for those who do not subscribe to a store, like me, there is a separate page with the fees). From what I can see from this VERY complicated and tiresome list, even those with a store will be (or are already) paying with MP in the Clothing and Jewelry categories:
11.5% on total amount of the sale.

This is the whole page outlining the fees and policy changes for eBay Store Subscribers:

Store selling fees for managed payments sellers
Starting July 20, 2020

The fees detailed on this page take effect for managed payments sellers on July 20, 2020. Read our article on Store selling fees for information on fees that apply today.

Starting July 20, 2020, your final value fees will be automatically deducted from your sales, and the remaining balance will be paid out to your bank account. We will invoice you for other fees as usual.

For a monthly subscription, you can run your own eBay Store. The fees and benefits vary depending on the type of Store subscription you choose.

When you have an eBay Store, you get more listings with zero insertion fees and pay lower final value fees, compared to selling without a Store. You also get access to additional tools to manage and promote your business.

The rest of the fee structure is the same as non-Store subscribers. We charge an insertion fee when you create a listing, and a final value fee when your item sells.

The amount we charge for Store subscribers depends on the item's price, the format and category you choose for your listing, any optional listing upgrades you add, your Store subscription package, and your seller conduct and performance.

Don't have an eBay Store? Read our article on standard selling fees for managed payments sellers

Store subscription fees
When you open an eBay Store, you'll choose a Store package: Starter, Basic, Premium, Anchor, or Enterprise. Visit our Seller Center to learn more about the benefits of opening an eBay Store.

When you first subscribe, you'll choose between automatic monthly or yearly renewals. For either option, we charge the subscription fee on a monthly basis.

Store type Store subscription fee per month Monthly renewal Yearly renewal Starter $7.95 $4.95 Basic $27.95 $21.95 Premium $74.95 $59.95 Anchor $349.95 $299.95 Enterprise Not currently available $2,999.95

We'll bill you for your Store every month until you cancel your subscription. To find out how fees are charged when you change your Store level or cancel your subscription/close your Store, please read our Stores Subscription Terms of Service.

Insertion fees

All sellers get a monthly allocation of zero insertion fee listings. As a Store subscriber, you get more zero insertion fee listings per month than non-Store sellers. The number you get depends on the Store subscription package you choose. Keep in mind, selling limits apply and certain categories are excluded from the zero insertion fee listings offer. Learn more about how zero insertion fee listings work, including the terms and exclusions for those listings.

After you've used your zero insertion fee allowance, insertion fees are:

Nonrefundable if your item doesn't sell
Charged per listing and per category. So if you list your item in two categories, you'll pay an insertion fee for the second category too
Charged for the original listing and each time your item is relisted
Charged per listing if you create duplicate auction-style listings for identical items. Read more about our duplicate listings policy
Credited back for auction-style listings that end in a sale for Basic, Premium, Anchor, and Enterprise Store subscribers (exclusions apply)

Good 'Til Cancelled listings

Good 'Til Cancelled listings are fixed price listings that renew automatically once per calendar month. We charge an insertion fee and applicable optional listing upgrade fees when you list your item for the first time, and each time it renews. These listings count toward your monthly zero insertion fee listings. Fee amounts are based on the terms in effect when the listing goes live and when it renews.

Final value fees
We charge one final value fee when your item sells, and you don't have to worry about third-party payment processing fees. This fee is calculated as a percentage of the total amount of the sale, plus $0.30 per order.

The total amount of the sale is the entire amount the buyer pays, including any handling charges, the shipping service the buyer selects, sales tax, and any other applicable fees. If you offer 1-day or international shipping as well as a cheaper or free option (like domestic shipping), the total amount of the sale is calculated based on the cheapest domestic option you offer. If you only offer 1-day or international shipping but no cheaper option like domestic shipping, the total amount of the sale is calculated based on the service the buyer chooses.

If you're in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam and your item isn't located in the US, the total amount of the sale is always calculated based on the shipping option your buyer chooses.

An order is defined as any number of items purchased by the same buyer at checkout with the same shipping method.

If you need to refund the buyer or cancel the sale, you may be eligible for a credit of the variable percentage portion of the final value fee provided that you refund the buyer in full in resolution of a return or cancellation request. The $0.30 per order fee will not be credited.

Please note that we charge different fees for non-Store sellers and different fees for selling vehicles in our Motors category.

Additional final value fees
You may be charged final value fees if you violate our policy of buying or selling outside of eBay, or we may apply additional final value fees if you are not meeting our performance expectations.

Buying or selling outside of eBay

If you offer or reference your contact information or ask a buyer for their contact information in the context of buying or selling outside of eBay, you'll be charged a final value fee based on the total amount of the sale even if your item doesn't sell. In this situation, the total amount of the sale is determined as follows:

Auction-style listing format: The total amount of the sale is the auction start price, the Buy It Now price (if applicable), the reserve price (if applicable), or the price identified between the buyer and seller, whichever is highest.
Fixed price listing format: The total amount of the sale is the fixed price or the price identified between the buyer and seller, whichever is higher.

Sellers not meeting performance expectations

Additional final value fees may apply on sales in the following circumstances:

If your account doesn't meet our minimum seller performance standards for the US at the time of sale, you'll be charged an additional 5% on the standard final value fees at the time the item sells. Go to your Seller Dashboard to check your current seller level. This fee does not apply to Above Standard and eBay Top-rated Sellers
If your rate of 'Item not as described' return requests is evaluated in your service metrics as Very High in one or more categories, you'll be charged an additional 5% on the standard final value fees for sales in those categories. You can view your personalized service metrics on your Service Metrics dashboard in Seller Hub.
Any additional final value fees will be calculated as a percentage of the total amount of the sale. We'll indicate which listings are subject to additional fees on your Account Summary.

Note: If your account isn't meeting our minimum seller performance standards and you're rated Very High in your rate of 'Item not as described' return requests at the time of the sale, you'll only be charged the additional final value fee for not meeting our minimum seller performance standards.

Dispute fee
If you are found responsible for a disputed amount as per eBay policies (e.g., chargeback), we charge a $20.00 dispute fee, excluding sales tax, for each dispute.

International fee

If your registered address is in the US, we charge an International fee if either the buyer's registered address or the delivery address for the item is located outside of the US. This fee is calculated as 1.65% of the total amount of the sale and is automatically deducted from your sales.

If your registered address is not in the US, please refer to the fee page for your country of residence for your International fee information.

Seller currency conversion charge

If your registered address is in the US, when a buyer purchases your item in a currency other than your payout currency, eBay will convert the funds to your payout currency using a "transaction exchange rate" we set for the currency exchange. The transaction exchange rate is adjusted regularly and includes a currency conversion charge of 3% applied on a base exchange rate. The base exchange rate is based on rates within the wholesale currency markets on the conversion day or the prior business day; or, if required by law or regulation, set at the relevant government reference rate(s). The currency conversion charge will be automatically deducted from your sales.

If your registered address is not in the US, please refer to the fee page for your country of residence for your Seller currency conversion charge information.

We always want to make sure we're very clear about the fees we charge, so here are some details you should be aware of:

Not all features, listing categories, and optional upgrades are available for managed payments sellers. Learn more about managed payments on eBay.
If you use supplemental services, such as buying and printing shipping labels on eBay, or if you participate in any of our advertising programs, additional terms may apply and you'll pay any costs or fees associated with those services. Details of the costs or fees will be on your monthly invoice and we'll charge the payment method you've set up on your seller account
All fees are in US dollars

Sellers may be invoiced for final value fees, international fees, and seller currency conversion charges under certain circumstances

Fees may apply if you end your auction-style listing early
The fees on this page apply to listings on eBay.com. If you list an item on another eBay site (for example, eBay.com.au or eBay.co.uk), the fees for that site will apply
If your payment method fails or your account is past due, we reserve the right to limit or suspend the services which eBay provides to you.
Seller fees don't purchase exclusive rights to web pages on eBay. We may, in our sole discretion and without consent from or payment to sellers, display third-party advertisements (including links and references thereto) and listings from other sellers on any eBay page
Depending on the tax legislation of your country of residency, local Value Added Tax (VAT), Goods and Services Tax (GST) or similar consumption tax might apply in addition to your eBay fees.

Depending on the tax legislation of your country of residency, local Value Added Tax (VAT), Goods and Services Tax (GST) or similar consumption tax might apply in addition to your eBay fees.

eBay stock to take a huge hit as sellers abandon the site in protest

Yes that is the policy as currently written.  What I posted is supported by this policy.  So what was your point with posting that?  It only supports what I've already said, just with lots more details.

Actually no because it is an MP policy.  Those currently not in MP or registered to go into MP in July would not be able to access the link.  But still I'm unsure as to why she posted it.

I really, honestly, do not understand why people are making such a big stink over Managed Payments. If you sell on any other site - Amazon, Etsy, Mercari, Poshmark, etc. - that is how they do their payments. I sold on Mercari for a while and it works just fine. It's not a big deal.

Most likely because ebay has not shown themselves to be the most trustworthy venue around.

On the MP board I have a list of what I consider outstanding questions.  So if you have done the registration process, you can ask for permission to get into that board and see the thread.  Keep in mind that registering does NOT put you into MP sooner.  If you have been told you are going into the program in July, registering now will NOT change that.

And what of sellers who have been told they'll be in MP come July but who, for whatever reason, don't have access to the boards?

Where are they supposed to get their "information"?

What eBay doesn't seem to realize is many sites would welcome you with open arms. They are profiting by sellers leaving eBay.

I think that is completely untrue.  I think Ebay is abundantly aware of who is and isn't competition out there.  There are some niche sites that tend to do very well and others not so much.  But a site with the variety of items that this site offers there is no site with this type of traffic.

Ebay has said that they absolutely expect some seller to leave the site because they don't want to go into MP. So the reports that they are unaware are significantly over stated.

Much of what the OP claims is inaccurate at best and exaggerated for sure.

Each seller has to decide what is best for them.  To stay or go.  But I keep advocating for doing this with the CORRECT information about MP, not the gossip and assumptions of some posters that are clearly angry with Ebay which colors their ability to evaluate the facts.  Be informed on the actual facts and then make the best decision you can for your business.  To do less is irresponsible and you may end up hurting yourself financially because of it.

Now if we could only get the actual facts prior to being railroaded in so we can make an intelligent decision for ourselves based on those facts.

@papermoneyforme

Oh believe me I couldn't agree with you more.  I've spent a lot of time trying to get accurate information on a dozen or so outstanding questions I have.  It has been weeks literally weeks that I've been trying for the information.

Ebay apparently did not have all the policy pages for MP updated with all the rule changes coming in July.  So they have been working on that instead of sharing information and until they are done, they won't say much.  It is my understanding this is going to change next week.  But I do not know for sure if they will really be ready.

On the MP board I have a list of what I consider outstanding questions.  So if you have done the registration process, you can ask for permission to get into that board and see the thread.  Keep in mind that registering does NOT put you into MP sooner.  If you have been told you are going into the program in July, registering now will NOT change that.

I won't be asked in for a while as I am in Canada and list on .ca and .com, but I need to know in advance if listing on 2 sites will still be alloed, if Can $ can be deposited to my Canadian account, and US dollars deposited to my US account under my Canadian ID.

If I move my US listings to this ID which is registered in the US what they will say when they ask me for my SSN which I obviously do not have.

And so forth and so forth.

Ebay is only doing the easy part seller lives in same country they list on and $ deposited to same country bank account.

That should not have taken 2 years to get right!

Anything more complicated than the basics, Ebay does not have a clue how to handle it.

I also need to know what happens to stores as far as cancelling without penalty if you opt not to go into managed payments and even if they will allow listing in 2 Ebay sites under 1 ID as I certainly won't pay their inflated conversion fees for money going in and going out.

This is some of the information I need prior to opting in and personally, Ebay does not have a clue about any of this at this time.

I am registered on dot com but also list on the Canada site and I've been informed that when my ID officially goes into MP ebay will end all my Canadian listings.

Whether they're going to do the same thing to Canadian sellers when MP comes to Canada, who's to know? It would be a pretty big slap in the face to all those Canadian sellers they assured "you can just list on dot com if you want to list in USD" at the time they changed .ca to CAD only wouldn't it?
