eBay stock to take a huge hit as sellers abandon the site in protest

We have all heard eBay promises and guarantees about how well their latest change is going to work. The real truth is that eBay is going to take a MAJOR HIT on the market as SELLERS abandon the site over protest.

Our companies have been on eBay since the week they started up. We did hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of business and initially loved the eBay and Paypal combination.

Then eBay started to change drastically, always for the worst.

Today Paypal is worth THREE TIMES what eBay is valued at. That will give you an idea about who people like.

I can only say now, after so many years, that I personally HATE eBay and LOVE Paypal.

No, Paypal is NOT going to be available on eBay in the future. The details are becoming clear as we hear the truth from sellers. Sellers are FORCED to give their personal banking info to the foreign company and then loose total control of their money. There is a huge delay before being paid, and no way to find out WHY.

Read the seller feedback. It's ALL NEGATIVE. Oh, and once you sign up for managed payments, you can NEVER opt out or retract. You are forever stuck with it. eBay has removed the contract line that says you can opt out.

Typical for eBay, you have NO OPTIONS. Sign up or close your account(s).

We did the later. We closed ALL of our eBay accounts that have existed since the 90's. Goodbye eBay and good riddance.

Exactly, I just watched something on youtube about  how paypal got started. It said when ebay first introduced paypal as a payment option there was a lot of pushback, they even had to ‘bribe’ people by giving them $20 to use it. ”

I’m not sure how accurate that part of the history is.  I don’t think eBay had to offer any incentives of its own.  My recollection is that when it was starting up, PayPal was offering five bucks to new users or for referrals or something along those lines and PayPal quickly developed its userbase and popularity as a payment method based on that, independently of anything eBay did.

I suspect my wife and I lost a lot of sales to US buyers because we couldn’t accept PayPal payments at that time.

People seem to forget or just don’t know that PayPal wasn’t really on anybody’s radar when eBay first started.  The initial electronic payment facilitator on this site was Billpoint, which was at first a partnership with Wells-Fargo before eBay took it over completely.

My wife and I used Billpoint for our sales because PayPal wasn’t an option in Canada at the time.  Once PayPal became an eBay company and Billpoint was shuttered, we were forced to choose between using PayPal or leaving eBay.  We’d heard a lot of scary things about PayPal, particularly around payment reversals, and we were leery.

But you know what?  We did our homework and figured out that the reason most people got into trouble with PayPal was because it was a new way of doing business and it was a steep learning curve.  We continued to figure out PayPal, adapt to it, and how to use it to its best advantage, and our sales remained solid, if not improved.

I suspect a lot of sellers are going through our “PayPal angst” but with MP rather than PayPal.  Change can be difficult, but the best way to cope with it is by educating oneself with reliable information from non-fake sources, not by spewing vitriol.  If one understands the ways of their foe, one can deal with them much more rationally.  No aluminum foil for headgear required.

Not sure if the forums from when eBay axed snail mail payments and went to electronic payments (Paypal only) are still accessible, but there was so much vitriol over this - more than over managed payments.  That eBay was DOOMED because that money order from Piggly Wriggly was no longer a valid payment method.

Which of the major sites use Paypal as a processor though? If sellers are leaving because of that, they can't go to Amazon or Etsy or Mercari because those three manage their own payments.  Not sure about the rest, but those are the biggest ones with the most traffic that I can think of.

One is an auction site. The other is a payment processor. Apples - meet oranges.

...may I ask...?

...if any helpful information that needs to reveal for the sake of selling here, would you mind to share...?

...or would you want everybody all load into a sinking boat...?

...please don't get mad at me for what I'm asking...and I apologize if I ever make you angry...

While I would fully expect eBay stock prices to drop if there were to be a mass exodus of sellers from eBay, I don't expect eBay's switch to managed payments to result in such an exodus.

I think that is completely untrue.  I think Ebay is abundantly aware of who is and isn't competition out there.  There are some niche sites that tend to do very well and others not so much.  But a site with the variety of items that this site offers there is no site with this type of traffic.

Ebay has said that they absolutely expect some seller to leave the site because they don't want to go into MP. So the reports that they are unaware are significantly over stated.

Much of what the OP claims is inaccurate at best and exaggerated for sure.

Each seller has to decide what is best for them.  To stay or go.  But I keep advocating for doing this with the CORRECT information about MP, not the gossip and assumptions of some posters that are clearly angry with Ebay which colors their ability to evaluate the facts.  Be informed on the actual facts and then make the best decision you can for your business.  To do less is irresponsible and you may end up hurting yourself financially because of it.

I'm not answering for @southern*sweet*tea , they are perfectly capable of doing that.

But what I would say is if you want info like this, you will need to be more specific and not so generic as that leaves way too much room for interpretation on what you are actually asking.

As for the "sinking boat", that is a common statement on the forums whenever Ebay makes a big change.  Something some share with us at least a couple times a year for a DECADE or two, yet here we are.  If Ebay is "sinking", it must be a mighty slow leak.  Typically if a company is going to go out of business it doesn't take this long to get there.  The last time as I remember it where some posters were predicting this was when they made GTC mandatory.  And before that was likely the announcement of MP starting.  There may have been some in between and certainly others before those changes.

I doubt anyone is "mad" at you.  There would be no reason for that.  You simply ask questions that you want answers to.  There is not fault in that.

I really, honestly, do not understand why people are making such a big stink over Managed Payments. If you sell on any other site - Amazon, Etsy, Mercari, Poshmark, etc. - that is how they do their payments. I sold on Mercari for a while and it works just fine. It's not a big deal.

My stink is if it ends up costing me more money due to the combined fees with ebay and how/what the fees are being charged on.

Paypal is one of the payment methods used by other major sites who have their own managed payment system, just as it is here.

Many sellers want a site that meets their needs...

a site with reasonably good traffic is not that easy to find these days.

Any given selling venue does not work for everyone or everything, just as eBay does not work for everyone or everything...

There are many lesser known selling venues that allow PayPal only as payment.

One just needs to do a search on the internet.

This may give some insight to other venues:

And at that point you do your homework and decide if you’re still getting value for your money or if a less-expensive site that may not have the same customer base would fit your needs as well or better.

That isn't what my research is showing for myself.  I compared all my US sales for the month of May against what I pay now and what I will pay in MP.  I came out ahead by 0.71 % in a combination of FVFs and payment fees.  That was with 78% of my sales taxable and 22% non taxable.

The ONLY way anyone is going to be able to know if this is a rate increase, decrease or even neutral, is to compare it against your own sales for a period of time.  You can NOT tell what the actual impact is on your account by only taking one, two or a few listings and comparing.
