eBay stock to take a huge hit as sellers abandon the site in protest

We have all heard eBay promises and guarantees about how well their latest change is going to work. The real truth is that eBay is going to take a MAJOR HIT on the market as SELLERS abandon the site over protest.

Our companies have been on eBay since the week they started up. We did hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of business and initially loved the eBay and Paypal combination.

Then eBay started to change drastically, always for the worst.

Today Paypal is worth THREE TIMES what eBay is valued at. That will give you an idea about who people like.

I can only say now, after so many years, that I personally HATE eBay and LOVE Paypal.

No, Paypal is NOT going to be available on eBay in the future. The details are becoming clear as we hear the truth from sellers. Sellers are FORCED to give their personal banking info to the foreign company and then loose total control of their money. There is a huge delay before being paid, and no way to find out WHY.

Read the seller feedback. It's ALL NEGATIVE. Oh, and once you sign up for managed payments, you can NEVER opt out or retract. You are forever stuck with it. eBay has removed the contract line that says you can opt out.

Typical for eBay, you have NO OPTIONS. Sign up or close your account(s).

We did the later. We closed ALL of our eBay accounts that have existed since the 90's. Goodbye eBay and good riddance.

@a1_surplus_sales

Let's try it this way.  You speak in a whole lot of generalities, assumptions and overstatements.  So it is very difficult to zero in on what your actual issue is with MP.

How about you list your top concerns, specifically and see if there is some information others can provide you that you have not yet considered or didn't know about?  There is no harm in doing that and we all may learn all kinds of things from it.  So please consider doing this.

I also sell on the other site that uses the same payment processor and I've never had a problem with them.

As far as payments, if Ebay works as good as the other site, there's not any huge delay in getting payments.

If I make a sale on Monday, the money is usually in my bank account on Wednesday.

Have a great day.

Me too.  And there are other sites that use them too like:

Shopify

Microsoft

Ubber

Pinterst

Bonobos

Etsy

Groupon

And more.

Re: eBay stock to take a huge hit as sellers abandon the site in protest

define "DOING WELL".....

In May, I sold more on my other selling venue than on eBay, so my other site is "doing well for me"; but that same site may not be doing well for other sellers...

no different than eBay > eBay has not done well for me for the past 3 years, but continues to do well for thousands upon thousands of other sellers...

Re: eBay stock to take a huge hit as sellers abandon the site in protest

a) The DJIA went from 17,500 in March of 2016 to 29,500 in March of 2020.
That is an increase of 68.6% percent in four years.
We are going through another Irrational Exuberance phase where stock prices have no relationship to revenue or profits.
An electric car manufacturer with a market cap 80 times revenue and realistically no profit.
An online shopping site with a market cap 7 times revenue and 71 times profit.
Some companies sell for 1 times revenue.
I would predict that disgruntled sellers leaving eBay would have no effect on the stock market or eBay share price.

b) I enrolled in Managed Payments in September of 2018.
It has been Business As Usual for me except for the two day payout delay.
I acknowledge my loss of Instant Gratification without the Paypal Debit Card.
I would encourage all sellers to make the switch.

c) A search of sold items indicates the OP has 27 sold for 90 days.
Instead of getting paid for one sale every 3.3 days, it will increase to 5.3 days for each payout.
If that is above your risk tolerance, then it was nice meeting you, acquaintance.

That was my experience with Mercari as well.  The only delay was due to Mercari policy (the buyer has to rate you before the money from a sale is released to you) rather than the payment system itself. The actual money transfers were about as fast as they are with PayPal.

And, honestly, if a seller cannot wait two days to get their money, their business model is unsustainable as they are running things WAY too close to the edge in terms of funds.

"People seem to forget or just don’t know that PayPal wasn’t really on anybody’s radar when eBay first started."

I was very leery of PP at first, but I really love it now. Just the fact that my CC number isn't floating around in too many cyber spaces is great, as I have been hacked a few times. I do all my shopping on-line now and spend my dollars with shops that use PP.

Agree with both highlighted statements.  The gap between "Main Street" and "Wall Street" if you will, is yawning - it's actually gotten to be a cause for concern because it's so out of joint.

When Etsy incorporated Paypal into their Etsy Payment scheme (which previously was called Direct Checkout) and dropped "free standing Paypal" status for shops (i.e., Paypal only), there were the same objections voiced there as here.  60,000 shops closed.  Didn't make a whit of difference simply because of the scale of the site.

I don't agree with a lot that's going on at Etsy, given that it's opened now to mass manufacture, drop shipping, Ali-Express, etc.  But mostly because shops like mine that grossed more than 10K/yr are now hit with a 12% surcharge for forced entry into a doubtful 'advertising' program 'leveraged' with their krap search engine, but even with my relatively high revenue, no one really cared when shop owners like myself closed.  It doesn't matter because of constant acquisition and divestiture.  I just took my merchandise and 10K/yr elsewhere.

Drop in a bucket - one big reason why throughout my career I always preferred working for smaller companies.

One is an auction site. The other is a payment processor. Apples - meet oranges.

It was also considered that eBay was something of a boat anchor to Paypal and predicted that Paypal would soar once the cord was cut and the company was no longer tied exclusively to one outlet.

I think that is completely untrue.  I think Ebay is abundantly aware of who is and isn't competition out there.  There are some niche sites that tend to do very well and others not so much.  But a site with the variety of items that this site offers there is no site with this type of traffic.

Ebay has said that they absolutely expect some seller to leave the site because they don't want to go into MP. So the reports that they are unaware are significantly over stated.

Much of what the OP claims is inaccurate at best and exaggerated for sure.

Each seller has to decide what is best for them.  To stay or go.  But I keep advocating for doing this with the CORRECT information about MP, not the gossip and assumptions of some posters that are clearly angry with Ebay which colors their ability to evaluate the facts.  Be informed on the actual facts and then make the best decision you can for your business.  To do less is irresponsible and you may end up hurting yourself financially because of it.

Now if we could only get the actual facts prior to being railroaded in so we can make an intelligent decision for ourselves based on those facts.

Oh believe me I couldn't agree with you more.  I've spent a lot of time trying to get accurate information on a dozen or so outstanding questions I have.  It has been weeks literally weeks that I've been trying for the information.

Ebay apparently did not have all the policy pages for MP updated with all the rule changes coming in July.  So they have been working on that instead of sharing information and until they are done, they won't say much.  It is my understanding this is going to change next week.  But I do not know for sure if they will really be ready.

On the MP board I have a list of what I consider outstanding questions.  So if you have done the registration process, you can ask for permission to get into that board and see the thread.  Keep in mind that registering does NOT put you into MP sooner.  If you have been told you are going into the program in July, registering now will NOT change that.

I won't be asked in for a while as I am in Canada and list on .ca and .com, but I need to know in advance if listing on 2 sites will still be alloed, if Can $ can be deposited to my Canadian account, and US dollars deposited to my US account under my Canadian ID.

If I move my US listings to this ID which is registered in the US what they will say when they ask me for my SSN which I obviously do not have.

And so forth and so forth.

Ebay is only doing the easy part seller lives in same country they list on and $ deposited to same country bank account.

That should not have taken 2 years to get right!

Anything more complicated than the basics, Ebay does not have a clue how to handle it.

I also need to know what happens to stores as far as cancelling without penalty if you opt not to go into managed payments and even if they will allow listing in 2 Ebay sites under 1 ID as I certainly won't pay their inflated conversion fees for money going in and going out.

This is some of the information I need prior to opting in and personally, Ebay does not have a clue about any of this at this time.

Of course eBay doesn’t have a handle on anything but the basics for MP.  In this case, the heavy lifting is being done by Adyen, and they entered this partnership with no idea of anything but the basics of eBay’s workings.

the spike makes perfect sense as the stores were closed and everyone home. So they shopped lots on Ebay. It won't continue though since the States are opening up.

Re: eBay stock to take a huge hit as sellers abandon the site in protest

Been in MP for over a year. Have had no problems. Sales I think increased with it. Get paid in about 3 days—no problem—cash flow is good, no problems with not being paid when we ship before being paid. Nice layout on the MP page to see where all your sales are and when they are in pending status , when payouts are available. Can pay for shipping labels through PP or Ebay account. My accounting software picks up the fees for tax purposes.

With Ebay being able to generate more income, rather that have PP take that income from them, then they will be in a better position to improve their product.

PP was not all a bed of roses, theirs chargebacks were backdoor from customers, their fees were rising.
