eBay - offer an opt out on selling to states requiring sales tax or

lose my business.  What the Supreme Court did last month was an abomination, but you could help your sellers and you're choosing not to.  For anyone not knowing what I'm talking about (I just came back from a month off and surprise!)...  requiring the collection and remittance of internet sales tax now isn't just for your home state / ones you have brick and mortar locations in!

I'd also like to know why in another thread a rep from eBay is trying to pretend there's a way around their own system.  So far in just one month there are already 3 states requiring the tax collection.  The number of states that will jump on board with this since the (basically republican) Supreme Court ruling last month will be likely large and unwieldly.  eBay flat out states in a separate announcement that there is NO 'opt out' feature.  

I can't hire tax people to deal with different state remittals / knowledge and I sure as hell don't have the means to do it myself.  Oh and eBay offering to do it for us next July instead of giving us the option right now of just not selling to those states?  No thanks - I'll just quit selling on eBay... and I've been on here for like 25 years.

Change your decision on this eBay, or lose sellers and in turn lose customers.  This will be your biggest mistake in over 20 years.

You clearly do not understand the supreme court's decision, which is to allow states to change their legislation about requiring sales tax, without putting an undo burden on small sellers. 

Most of the few states who have chosen to pass these laws - and the huge majority have not yet done so - have put a minimum amount in their laws which most sellers will not reach.  That amount is in the six figures range, with one exception (Pennsylvania).  Pennsylvania and others have required the "marketplace facilitator" - ie eBay themselves, to collect and remit the tax.  eBay is already collecting for the state of Washington, and will start collecting for three other states, one in January and the other two next July.

You should already be collecting (or not) depending on the laws in the state in which you reside.  If you are not, you need to straighten that out.  But at this point there is no need to go rushing around closing your internest business down because of current sales tax laws in states other than your own.    

You need to do a lot more research on this issue before jumping to conclusions.

I agree with you. Especially since ebay is collecting the tax for, as far as I can tell, everyone who sels on thier platform and just calling it one lumped together business. But its not going to be the end for me, even though I resent it. Thier manahed payments chaos might be the end, depending on how much like the launch craziness the end product produces.

Taxes are the way the country runs. Least of your problems. I would be more concerned with the implement of ebays payment fiasco. Buyers are not completing at an alarming rate for sellers who signed up

Boy you guys summed it up pretty good. I'm not letting a company who cant even run a decent search  go in and out of my bank account. And as pathetic as this site is NOW. Imagine the mess the new payment system will cause. Buyers are practically non existant now. Everyone just wait. One more thing I would like to add a bit off topic. We are coming upon the holidays soon.  sales should increase. Seems like every holiday season gets worse. Year by year. I think they turn off the little guys to add computer space for the big box stores. So dont count on much  hope there.

And yet the economy is racing at record highs. Amazon, and every other market are just crazy busy, sellers making good money even though the fees there are more.

PoshMark sellers are claiming record sales on clothes that people don't even seem to look at here.

Bonanza is creating profits for themselves and their sellers without the restricting rules. List your website, contact info, etc.

Etsy even though not for modern stuff is showing profits for sellers on items that you can't get exposure for on ebay. Only because they don't have "product identifiers" so ebay search ignores them and the items are only found by "mistake" on ebay.

You can sell new items with product identifiers on Jet. Many sellers making good profits there.

Blue Jay is a way under utilized platform. Totally free. A $200 sale on there is $ 60.00 more in profits. Ebay posts my overall fees at 30% with listing fees, final value fee, shipping value fee, paypal fee (I think they are actually using this to promote their new payments).

There is money to be made online. Just no longer on ebay.

@myboardid  eBay is not already collecting sales tax for Washington or any other state.  There was a glitch where eBay released code before it was supposed to that showed a message on the tax rate table saying they were collecting it, but that was an error and it was rolled back.

eBay will be collecting tax for WA starting January 1, 2019 and PA and OK starting July 1, 2019.  Until that time, sellers are responsible for determining if they meet the thresholds and must collect and remit tax accordingly.

Ebay is not going to be going in or out of your bank account.    The new system is run by  Ayden,  the company that handles Etsy,  Uber,  Spotify and Microsoft.

It is one of the largest payment processors and it does a good job.

The system is 'Adyen' and somebody is going to have to have access to funds OR withhold depositing (for 180 days?) if ebay is going to continue with MBG and refunds on returns. 

Somebody is going to have to have access to or another backup payment source - another credit card or bank (savings or checking) account in case of a CC chargeback, which ebay will have to pay from ..... where?

MS, Etsy and others may use Adyen, but I would think that each has their own contract and varied stipulations on methods and management.

So you plan on selling only to the 4 states withouth the sales tax?  I am not sure it's going to work out for you.

There are "5" states that don't have a sales tax. Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon.
