eBay Testing Changes To Payment Process For Offers & Auctions

Per the ValueAddedResource blog, it appears ebay is testing its way into a solution for auto payment/ combined shipping. Worth a read:

They need to cancel this b.s asap... I'm just a buyer..

I don't like my credit no. displayed on the auction I'm bidding on..

Who ever thought this up should be fired.

Now, there's the worst idea I've seen on here in a long time, and it's up against some pretty stiff competition.

Can you even imagine?  -He would charge buyers a membership fee, probably fire the social media agents who are actually helpful, and who knows what else.

Where did you get the idea that your credit card number is displayed on the auction???

Ebay seems to always be conducting tests , & tests, then more tests. Likely resulting in some degree of user confusion & stress for those impacted

Any non employee, that Ebay has included into a test group should receive compensation.

I'm sure you're the only one who can see it. Even if other people could, there's nothing they could do with the last 4 digits.  It's just there so you know which of your cards you used.

Please read the blog post in my first post in this thread.

A couple questions:

Are these changes a test, or the beginning of a roll out?

Can you explain exactly how these will be implemented? Especially the one about the three day time period.

TIA!

devon@ebay  - I know eBay does not typically publicly announce when they are doing testing but this is yet another example where it would seem in everyone's best interest to do so, not just for the sake of users but also for the sake of your coworkers in front line customer service.

Here's just one example of the confusion that is being caused by the "snooze, you lose" feature that leaves listings active until someone pays for the item.

https://community.ebay.com/t5/Report-eBay-Technical-Issues/Accepted-Offer-But-Not-showing-Up-anywher...

It's concerning that this seller reports customer service did not seem to be aware of the (test? phased rollout? whatever this is?) and said there were several similar tickets open, treating it like a technical issue instead of understanding it may be "working as intended".

@ittybitnot and everyone else...more info to to the "trial by fire" file.

It appears on the "snooze, you lose" feature, the way eBay is facilitating that is when the seller accepts an offer, it actually sends it back to the buyer as a counter-offer with immediate payment required.

That sounds like a very convoluted way to do it if you ask me, but here are a few examples so far.

@valueaddedresource

LOL @ "Trial by Fire File"

I read the following one this morning, but there was no mention of IPR for the Accepted offer that normally would be awaiting payment or auto-billed.  The listing on the seller side was renamed offer sent (even though it was already accepted),   and is apparently just sitting there. There was no mention that the buyer initiated offers were "countered".  Perhaps the three day extention is only for auctions and does not include offers?  Then why was it not auto-billed when accepted? Unless something new was rolled out to this SELLER or their BUYER????

It may just take the seller to accept many offers for the same thing (sort of like they can SEND blind offers to multiple  buyers for the same thing) and have those that thought their offer was accepted get angry when the supposed "you snooze you lose clause" takes effect.

https://community.ebay.com/t5/Selling/Accepted-Offers-but-it-s-showing-Sent-Offers/m-p/34182616#M232...

In this one the seller does have the default set to YES requirements set, and I suggested they turn them off and see if it goes back to normal.  It has been said by other "buyers" that if the seller turns those off "mid stream" so to speak the autobilling ceases even if the seller put up a payment source in order to bid.  Don't know about offers.

It could be eBay is only tweaking the "offers" flow, since there has not been one seller complaint that their ended auctions that were set to auto-pay have suddenly given buyers three days extra!!!!  Since not all BUYER IDs are forced for auctions yet,  and those that ARE may not be participating, it may take some time.  Sooner or later though, it is bound to happen.

Thanks for the heads up!  Stay tuned for the eBay/Kafka Miniseries Season 18, episode14 "Accepting offers is a lie".....

Happy holidays!

Correction....seller said he accepted multiple "counter offers" from their buyer.   I better go read it again before the sellers here add me to their BBLs for NOT READING....LOL.

Yeah quite irritating, I’ve just gone back to review the item I first noticed it happening on. The “offer” I sent (their offer that I accepted) has expired and no word from the buyer, so it’s even worse than if it had actually accepted it, at least then eBay would pester them with emails and I would have the ability to message them. Allowing the item to remain listed makes sense for heavy traffic items I guess, but lower traffic items like many of those that I’m selling don’t need to stay up, it’s just as easy for me to cancel an unpaid sale and relist it. It especially sucks because this is a “solution” to a problem I rarely come across (non-payment), maybe it’s the kind of items I sell but it’s a non factor for me, so their solutions are only an inconvenience. They’re trying to make everyone happy and in turn are making no one happy. I’m all for seller protection, but seller protection won’t matter if the site becomes so convoluted and irritating that it pushes all of the potential buyers to Amazon and Etsy. (A direction things were headed prior to initiating these anti-buyer policies anyway). They should be adjusting their focus to making the app and website more cohesive, as most new users (buyers and sellers) will be using the app and possibly never opening the website, and the amount of things that you are unable to do through the app that are easily accessible on the site is astounding.

I'm buying less because of this B.S policy...

Who's running I mean ruining ebay..

This does not encourage buyers to buy more..

They stop buying .. The sellers gets frustrated because of this.

And quit and go elsewhere.

It would appear that appropriate ebay behavior then would be to encourage & not to discourage purchasing

eBay Testing Changes To Payment Process For Offers & Auctions

As a buyer, this new "Offer" process stinks. I recently was offered a price by the seller and made a counter offer, which was accepted. I received the email telling me so. Unaware that things had changed, I figured I could pay for it later when I sat down to make my payments. So when I went to locate the purchase, it was nowhere to be found. Not in bids or purchases. I had to click the link from the email to find it. Then I realized it was still an active listing somehow. When I scrolled through my entire Offers list, I found it by date way down in the list. Horrible! The email saying the offer was accepted did not specify that someone else could steal it from me. No policy change notice was sent to broadcast this FUNDAMENTAL change to how things have worked for eons. I am flabbergasted at this ridiculous change.

I gather that some buyers do not pay for their purchases and that this was the reason for the change. However, how is an accepted offer any different from an auction purchase? There is always a period for payment. This is simply a stupid decision IMHO.

How can you make an offer with confidence when someone else can simply steal it if you don't happen to be around or available to pay at the precise moment the offer is accepted? This makes the process essentially useless. There needs to be a period to pay given the buyer so that they can make good with the assurance no one else snipes it away.

I have encountered occasionally the requirement to enter payment information prior to making an offer so that it can be collected when accepted. While not a fan because I do not know exactly when the payment is made to keep my accounting straight, it at least preserves the intent of making an offer and having it accepted. Once an offer is accepted, it should mean just that. PERIOD. End of story. If payment failure is an issue, put a limited time frame of one day or something, then open it to other bidders again. It should be on HOLD until paid or released due to non-payment.

Once again, eBay continues to deteriorate in ways that would never have imagined possible.
