Why did eBay keep $55 of my $225 sale? This doesn’t seem fair!

Let me take a stab at this one.
$225.00 Total sale
$30.21 Final value fee ($225.00 x .1325 plus .40 cents)
$24.79 Shipping label Priority Mail to eBay.
$170.00 net to seller.
You could have shipped your leather boots via Ground Advantage instead of Priority Mail and save a few dollars. As you can see shipping is not cheap and that is why I don’t offer free shipping. Even if you charged the buy $20.00 you would increase your take from the sale by about $18.00.

That is how it goes.

Does that $55 include the amount you paid to ship the order? (listing offered free shipping to the buyer)

You would need to check Payouts in seller hub and investigate Transactions. Dig down there to see exactly what has transpired. Every penny is accounted there.

That would be correct if you're promoting at 10%.

You mean you listed an item for sale on this site without learning what the Selling Fees are? How did you price your item without this information? Why would you sell something on a site without even knowing what they were going to charge you to do that?
For new sellers, it is always in their best interest to at a very minimum to learn how to create an effective listing within the rules, what are the selling fees, the return policy options and what they mean and how does your money get processed. I take it that you didn't do that as you didn't feel it was important, you could just wing it and get by.
One thing I tell new sellers. NEVER ASSUME you know something that you don't know. Don't assume you know how to handle something on Ebay without knowing the policy that goes with whatever you are trying to do. Logic is not always something that is going to save you on even apply here on Ebay. So ALWAYS come and ask us for help if you have a situation. Just like you did for this. I realize I'm giving you a bit of a lecture, but the situation really calls for one, even though you might not enjoy it or take me seriously or even read what I have to say.
Here are some important links to areas you should really take the time to learn about as a new seller.

And make sure you know this policy extremely well. It is a long one, so it will take a bit. You may not feel you need to learn this one, but I assure you that you do. All of it.

First I only see one sold item as shown below which was a $250 sale before sales tax. theteamsetguy did a good job of estimating your costs and payout based on the information you provided. Of note eBay didn't take all of the $55 you stated. Part of it went to the USPS for the shipping and you shipped Priority Mail and offered free shipping. You can bring up the order details by using the drop down menu on the individual item order to show the exact selling costs breakdown.
One thing to note with regards to free shipping. It has the potential to inflate the total cost to the buyer as well as the FVF's you pay. About 1/2 of the states do not charge sales tax on shipping when it can be separately identified so you could have saved your buyer a few bucks had you used calculated shipping and as theteamsetguy noted potentially a few more dollars by using a cheaper shipping method such as USPS ground advantage. If your buyer was/is in a state that does not apply sales tax to shipping since they are not paying sales tax on shipping you are not paying FVF's on that portion of the sales tax.

Craney, I have taught many aspiring sales folks in my 61 yrs., 29 direct sales and 32 retailing. By far, the single word that has affected the greatest number of attitudes is FAIR. Dwelling on those four letters, is guaranteed to have a negative effect on success.

You are correct, some states do not charges sales tax on shipping and others do. For an example, here in the state of Washington, shipping is taxable in certain cases. When shipping is billed on the same invoice as the product, then it is taxable. If shipping is billed separately, it is not subject to sale tax.
I don't know if there are other states with a similar law.

Why? How much were they supposed to keep?
You don't have a clue, do you?
Did you bother to read what the fees are BEFORE you sold something?

I recently had a $150 sale for a pet carrier. Ebay took $22.43 in final seller fees.
As far as I can see, the fee is supposed to be $150 x $13.6% = $20.40 plus + .40 = $20.80.
Is it me or Ebay that is doing something wrong?
Actually, I just saw it. They are taking a commission off the final price the seller paid including the sales tax. That's ridiculous. They get a commission on sales tax? Think there ought to be a class action suit.
