Hi. I want to sell an item so that, after the fees are taken out, I will clear $1200. Is there anyone, with really good math skills, that could tell me what I need to price the auction at? TYIA.

I am sorry, but a calculator would be quicker than this......

Can help you do the math...thankfully, trusty abacus is at the ready.
Usually, though....vs figuring out the net/net...we try to be sure what the "saleable" price range is and work backwards.
Are you still in Paypal vs MP?
Item price + shipping (fees 10.2%)
Paypal (item + shipping + tax) 2.9% + .30 trans fee

Use this calculator and put in different amounts. https://www.ebayfeescalculator.com/usa-ebay-calculator/
I would use worse case tax scenario of 11%
I think you're gonna have to be around $1400 or so to clear $1200

I’m not all that good at math, but I have this handy dandy phone that is. I also have an ebay report that tells me it costs me about 33% to sell on here from listing to shipping.. so...
1200 x 33% = 396
And the answer is... $1596.00

Using your formula of 33%, you would need to sell it for $1791.00 +/- a few cents. Your current calculation that nets $1200.00 on a $1596.00 sale is based on a cost percentage of a hair under 25%.

Hey, Siri did the math. Not me.

The price you need to charge would depend on (1) which category you list in, since that determines the final value fee rate; (2) where the buyer lives, which determines whether the buyer pays a sales tax and how much that rate is, and (3) what it will cost you to ship and the FVF you pay on what you charge for shipping. Cost (2) cannot be determined in advance before the item is actually sold. Cost (3) can be only be estimated, unless you used Media Mail or Priority Mail flat rate packaging.
If you want to end up with $1200 after listing in a category where the final value fee rate is 12.55%, then you'd have to charge about $1372. Round that up to $1400 to account for the unknown costs in items (2) and (3), i.e., shipping costs and the FVF on any sales tax that the buyer pays.

Oh my stars..
Do we have to charge more for the tax? The tax comes out of the price for which we list an item???
I thought it was added to the final price the buyer was given at check-out. $1200+ any shipping + tax..
Is that incorrect?
I was under the impression eBay added the tax, collected it and paid it..
If that is not so, it will makes things exceedingly difficult for me..

Sorry if I wasn't clear. Yes, eBay collects the sales tax from the buyer and sends it to the state.
BUT the buyer's sales tax payment is included in the total payment that you receive from them, so you are charged FVF on it.
For instance, if you sell an item for $1400 to a buyer in a state with a sales tax rate of 5%, the sales tax is $70 and their payment to you will be $1470. You will have to pay FVF on that $70. If it's in a category with a FVF of 12.55%, then the extra FVF on $70 would be about $8.78. eBay sends the $70 to the buyer's state.

No really I thought I had it wrong..
I knew my experience & what had happened to me but for a second I thought the MP was gonna redo the tax collection responsibility too. I just got a lil confuzzled & panicked. LOL

you forgot the 4th aspect - will anyone even bid on it for the price they want to get - and there lies the great unknown - maybe yes, maybe no, auction high price item, don't forget the charge for reserve price. Or may end up $200.
