eBay Dead Slow Sales 2019

If you go look at the archives you will find thread after thread of people complaining their sales have dropped off. I will have to admit that I have spent far too much time reading them and have even posted one or two.

For me it was April 2017 when it just fell off. Wasn't all that that long ago I had my first day in 5 years without a sale.

They changed some things, that's for sure. Griping about it won't help us so I thought I would share some ways that I have begun to find an increase in sales.

1. Promoted listings is not a choice. If your complaining your sales fell off and you are not using promoted listings you need to go do a blanket 1% on everything and watch it increase immediately. They found a creative way to increase the fees in a way that looks like its optional. Its not optional.

2. Stagnant Inventory. I have read that sellers have gotten eBay reps to 'reset' their listings. While I believe they may have been told this I don't believe that whatever the rep did had any meaningful effect. I have read that doing a bulk edit and not changing anything gets it going. I don't see that being very effective either. It used to be that if you posted an item you could leave it posted forever and it would eventually sell. I think the new eBay is taking a lot more data points into account like views, watchers, identical solds, and who knows what else. If it doesn't like your listing, it buries it and shows it nobody. I have not been keeping items nearly as long and I have been a lot more aggressive in revising and lowering prices. I revise at least as many items as I post everyday and double most days. Sometimes its a $1 thats the difference in sold and not sold.

3. Offers to buyers. I have sold several items with this new feature. If its not an option on your dashboard you can manually type the link to get to it. Its available to everyone.

4. Offer international shipping outside of GSP. I have had lots of sales this way and printing the label for a first class international (up to 4lbs by the way) is as easy as printing a US one. The only difference is you have to sign it. I have had a couple people do something like pay $150 in shipping to get a $75 item, and that kills me on the fees but that rarely happens and I have yet to loose money on any deal because of it.

5. Returns and cases. I seem to notice a drastic dip in sales directly after I get two returns and/or cases. Just one doesn't seem to have an effect but it seems like if I get two inside of a week, sales suck for several days after. Anyone else notice this? This has led me to a point to where I will not sell anything with a defect. People are looking at the gallery photo and the price and NOTHING ELSE. I will sell new, and fully functional used, and that's it. Sometimes really expensive items still have significant value even if they are only partially working, I will not longer sell that. If I don't feel like the ENTIRE listing can meet the expectation created by just the first photo I don't list it on ebay at all. I guess what I am saying is be more selective with your sourcing.

6. Competition. There are a lot more people selling on ebay. I sure wish I knew how many sellers were on ebay three years ago vs. today. I really have been trying to find items that nobody else is offering or have few comps. I have found myself passing on things not because the margin wasn't there but because there are 3,423 other ones already posted. In the past I would have bought anything that had a sold comp with a good margin, not anymore.

So that was my goal of this post, just to share some ways I am finding a little traction. Hope it helps.

On a side note....

For going on three or four months I noticed a big decrease in return abuse and entitled cheats. I had a period of time with 0 open returns and quite a run with only 1.  This weeks I had 2 big fat cheaters. They were all cheap items that had returns anyway, and I got the items back, so not a huge deal. They only stole shipping fees.

One guy asked a silly question about a set of waders I had posted. I referred him to the portion of the listing that answered the question so he couldn't use the semantics of my answer to start a return later. He didn't like that answer so he bought the item with the intent of returning it. Brand New Item. Has UPC. Has same information as all other sellers with same item and same UPC.  eBay was kind of enough to remove the defect, but having to call waste my time, kinda aggravating.

I had a somewhat rare bible. It was in pretty rough shape. I wouldn't source or list the same item again. I took good photos of all the damage and described all the damage in detail. If I remember right this bible in good used condition goes for around $40+. This one sold for $20. 30 Day returns, no good reason needed to return it. Shipping was just over $3. Then of course they choose a reason that causes me a defect and say " I love this bibles I would never allow any one do this type of harm to any book let a lone a bible". What a looney toon.

I love how these people can come to ebay and treat it like facebook and at the end of the day it doesn't cost them a dime. They are not shopping for items, they are shopping for a problem to create. eBay does offer us one thing most other platforms don't, the blocked list.

Person 1 had 0 feedback. I think they created a new account to distance what they were about to do from their real account. Person 2 had 1 feedback. Not well established members of the ebay community by any stretch. Returns for users with less than 5 feedback should require a look by an actual person at ebay before they are allowed to apply a defect. Even if it looks like it went through to the user, actual look prior to defect application seems like common sense.

So I know there are some people out there that had a big drop in sales, is there anyone out there that has kept pumping up items and found some success with any new techniques? Get any crazy returns?

Anyone out there sell 20 items instead of 10 and wanna tells us all who say the sales fell off we are crazy because you had a 100% increase? 🙂

For everything that happens conditions exist such that nothing else could have happened.

Re: eBay Dead Slow Sales 2019

I just did a google shopping search for some of my items. NONE of my listings that I am promoting on EBay came up.  ZERO.  What exactly are we paying them for?  I saw quite a few of ESTY listings. That tells me that I should take all the money I am giving EBay and give it to ETSY. The whole things is so disgusting. Bad way to start the day. Sorry for venting.

Re: eBay Dead Slow Sales 2019

I feel the problem is Ebay is trying to compete with Amazon, which could never happen that's why you now see a lot of new items ads etc. But  hoping Ebay realizes they have a brand and a market that Amazon can't compete with yet. Unfortunately a lot of sellers are putting there items on other platforms.  I know sellers who use Bonanza,Poshmark,Esty,Shopify and so on for there items so all there items are on each site and whoever's platform sells the item it's just deleted off the rest So in return the site that didn't sell it is missing out on the VERY HIGH FEES. It's a bit more work but they say they need to change with the times. Hopefully they see and know this is happening. And little by little there losing more and more money.

Re: eBay Dead Slow Sales 2019

I guess that is what I cannot get trough my head, why a company that must be seeing a decline in revenue does not make changes  for the better. The only thing I can conclude is there is another motive for this strategy. In the mean time they are killing many sellers income and making it look like they could care less.

Re: eBay Dead Slow Sales 2019

That is bad news to hear. No worries about venting. My other friends who are ebay sellers and I have been venting for months to each other now. Its slow for everyone. Maybe its a bit of ebay and maybe it is just too many sellers and an overabundance of merchandise now. Not enough people to buy it all.....it does seem though that many searches are not working to get visibility like they used to and that is something to be angry about for sure. We pay decent fees for the help....if we succeed as sellers, ebay succeeds too.....

Re: eBay Dead Slow Sales 2019

Had a huge dropoff in sales since 2019. Now I believe its a combination of different factors:

Post office incresead prices, my suppliers increased prices, eBay fees wont help either, sellers not buying the items because inventory is now too expensive, sellers returning items for the few sales I have for nonscenical reasons, post office loosing items, inflated seller protection, constant changes about how eBay show your listings, my own errors in understanding how to set up eBay store properly, etc....

I've had just about enough, I will cancel the subscription and the store. There are a lot of useful advices in this thread, thank you for these, I will take them to the heart and rebuild the store in 1-2 years or so, if I ever find the courage again.

Re: eBay Dead Slow Sales 2019

My experience is that many of these "watchers" actually have the same item that is listed and want to see what theirs will sell for when they decide to sell it!  I have done the same thing as you in sending offers and not one bite! Unless I am willing to sell for 25% or less of the list price.  Unfortunately I think I have out grown ebay. I have a lot of higher end maps and prints and I get way more at the right real auctions than on ebay.  For example I listed a pair of rare 1806 large flower prints that would cost over $13,000 in a high end gallery (which is the only place to find them). And I could not sell them for $2,000 in two years on ebay.  I put them in a southeastern auction and got $5800 for them.  Ebay does not get buyers that can afford this level even at 1/6th the price. Unfortunately most old time sellers I know have already left the site saying it is not worth the time any more! Good luck.

Re: eBay Dead Slow Sales 2019

my experience with best offer is buyers believe best offer is free license meaning 50%-75% off asking price, and they get very unhappy when you tell that anything more than 15%-20% off is very unrealistic because of fees etc and very competitive pricing and competition on ebay.

Re: eBay Dead Slow Sales 2019

eBay is Dead!

They committed suicide by app.

eBay isn't eBay anymore.

Nothing even resembles eBay anymore. What sold things were endless scrolling til' you found the one. It's all gone.

The only way to save eBay is bring back the 2015 format the 2.9 simple version for the app.

Restore PayPal

Return to us the classic site.

Bring eBay back.

It's not even fun to search & shop anymore, I type in what I'm searching for and it gets autocorrected in the search bar. ANNOYING.

Restore all the listing formats.

Remove 3rd party ads.

Sadly eBay is Dead.

Does anyone else have dead sales for days which is new and strange. But then get a sale then within minutes get another sale and sometimes more. It is like 1 thing sells then some algorithm bumps you up in the ebay listings.

Re: eBay Dead Slow Sales 2019

Yes.....I have had the same thing happen to me.  I don't have a sale for a week.....then boom....I get 4-7 within 2-3 days......then it dies again.  I also notice that when I get this little "Boom" in sales, the customers locations usually are in the same state....and it's always WI, CA and TX (I live in Illinois).  I do not know what the hell Ebay is doing, but they are just killing off their sellers like me.  I have been doing ebay for 20+ years, and the last 2 years have been absolutely horrible for me.  After the holidays, I am considering moving to another platform.....for the amount of effort and fees that Ebay takes from me a month, I am not even close to making a profit anymore.  It's just not worth it.  Ebay really needs to do an "ego" adjustment, and go back to the time when the platform worked for ALL SELLERS and Ebay EQUALLY...….not this corporate **bleep** that Ebay has turned into.  Very disappointed in Ebay…...this is not the same company that it used to be when I started selling...….Ebay used to be a lot fairer to their sellers.  Unfortunately, not anymore.

Re: eBay Dead Slow Sales 2019

I echo everything you said. Recently I had a slew of sales after a dead period of 4-5 days. All came from Texas or nearby (I am in FL). Then a few days no sales followed by maybe one or two random states. Then 4-5 sales just from CA and WA state. Super weird. I'm tired of wasting time here but this is my only form of income and all I really know or desire to do at this time so I'm holding out as long as possible.

Must be a bunch of Millennial third world people that would do something so foolish and killing ebay off - miquelcpoins

You may have a very good point and it may  be  closer to reality than some  may believe . Poor management skills will destroy  a company  even faster than it has destroyed  some nations . Tulips

Yup, sure must be those Millennials who, if they have a corporate job at all, are still on the lowest rungs of the corporate ladder. It couldn't have anything at all to do with the Boomers who still won't retire and have been running the show since the early 90's.

It has much more to do with companies  trying not to spend  much money  by hiring poorly educated and less experienced  employees in  other countries  to do the job  .  I have no idea what you're talking about  when mentioning boomers who won't retire . Most people [ the vast majority ] can not wait to leave the rat race  and retire as soon as they are able . If  you've got some stats that prove otherwise  I'll take a look at them.  Tulips

Just my experience and from talking to others, at least in my former industry, their experiences are the same. Lots of head honchos in their 70's and 80's who still refuse to retire even though, for them, they'd have been eligible at 55. Even going by today's standard of 65 they're 10 or 15 years beyond that, with no sign of quitting, and if you talk to these people they will make constant excuses about how they just don't feel the younger gens are capable of running things, so they won't retire - yet, won't give anyone else a chance, either.

When the people at the top don't retire, gen x below them don't move up the ladder. When they don't move up the ladder, the millennials below them don't make it into management. When the millennials don't get promoted, Gen Z doesn't even make it into supervisory positions. You see the problem here?

You do realize that the oldest millennials are now in their late 30's? Where do you think they should be by now? I'd say, those who took the corporate ladder should at least be in the lower rungs of management by now if that was their ambition but its not possible because all the Gen X'ers are still in those positions because the middle and upper management Boomers won't retire.

The last corp I worked with had a ton of Boomers in upper-mgmt & c-level all over 70 years old. These people were all multi-millionaires I'm sure with retirement funds that would make you drool... but retiring? Nope. Won't hear of it.

I'm not trying to toss aside boomers or slight their accomplishments but every generation in this world deserves its "time in the sun" so to speak. At the rate things have been moving by the time I'd be eligible to move into an upper management position I'd already be at retirement age. Its stuff like this that made me leave the industry after 17 years.

I had bosses who flat out told me that I was a candidate for promotion and that they wanted to move me into management but there was simply nowhere to put me until someone above moved on.

I'm 61 and even I have had this experience, so it doesn't even only affect GenX or younger.  I could never ascend to the higher levels in my career as an executive admin. because the people 10-15 years older than me refused to retire.  I worked at old, Fortune 100 product companies where people stayed for life if they could.  The only way the companies could get rid of them is periodically offer anyone over 55 or 60 an attractive "package" deal, which unbelievably a lot of them would not take!  But just as that was happening in my case we had the recession of 2008 and I was laid off at 51 along with 250 other employees - Just old enough at a bad time to have a very hard time getting a new job.  I finally did after 2.5 years of constant searching, but I had to take a lower level job than I wanted since the higher level jobs were not available because the older boomers just would not retire for love or money.  Most of them lost retirement money when the stock market tanked in 2008 and were afraid to retire.  Fast forward 5 years and I was wrongfully terminated from the new job after an injury at work no less at the age of 58 (don't get me started on the lack of ethics at this company).  I won a lawsuit but not for as much as I would have needed.  But forget finding a job at my age now!  Despite looking younger and presenting well I was not able to find another job even after looking constantly for 1.5 years.  Age discrimination is very real, even the agencies and friends in HR tell me that.  And a lot of those same 70 year olds STILL refuse to retire.  Plus now companies are looking for ways to shrink its admin. staff, so forget it.

So I gave up and now my husband and I have to pinch pennies and worry about our future - Which lead me to selling my old clothes (and some NWT) on eBay.  Sales were GREAT for the first 2 months in June and July but have continually slacked off since then, which lead me to this thread.  Now I can barely pay my car payment on what I make in a month.  I can't believe how well I did originally and don't understand why sales slacked off so much so suddenly.  Some of it is seasonal as I know I can't expect to sell much summer stuff in the Fall.  But recently I have added a lot of colder weather stuff and still have not had much response.  I used to send out offers and almost every one would accept.  Now for at least a month and a half it's been crickets.  The views per item are way down too.  I look at my competition for the same and similar items and know I'm underselling them in most cases if not matching prices.   So I don't get it, but judging from what I've read here, I'm not alone.  I too have become suspicious that eBay is stacking the deck in favor of some sellers and against others somehow.  I have taken to using the promotion feature but so far have only sold one item that way.  I am considering listing some things on other platforms although that's a lot of extra work on sites I'm not as familiar with.

As soon as I think I'm all done  shipping  and put away the tape  and stuff  I get another alert on my cell phone . I've seen a slight increase  on e bay  in the last few days  but nothing close  to  that ,, yet . I expect sales will start to increase  everywhere  soon. Tulips

Re: eBay Dead Slow Sales 2019

I have been selling on Ebay for 15 plus years successfully but since earlier in the year our sales have decreased so much that I am very worried about the situation.  This week has been terrible for sales. What is happening?

oh man, do I wish this would happen! Still waiting. It's so bad the crickets aren't even making noise, just dead silence.
