buyer saying item is defective but my listing pictures don't show that it is.

i recently sold a watch strap on here and the buyer is saying that it's defective and i should have known and put it in my description. he says it's missing a metal piece, but my pictures clearly show it wasn't there and that it is missing stitching. its a vintage watch strap and i listed it as pre-owned. he's submitted it a refund and said in a message that i should have listed it as defective, i don't think the strap is actually defective and was unaware it was supposed to come with a additional metal piece. i know ebay is really bad at not siding with sellers, but i don't think i did anything wrong, plus i sent him additional pictures of measurements and he never asked if the metal piece was there, just for the measurements. and as far as the stitching where he's saying it's missing, his pictures look the same as my listings pictures.

Hi @spookylittlelizardgirl

Your listings says NOTHING about any flaws in the band at all.  Buyers aren't supposed to figure out from photos what might be missing or flawed, since it often is difficult to tell a flaw from what is a defect in the photo.

You listed the strap as 'Used' ... meaning it is 'fully functional'.  If there is nowhere to tuck in the strap ... then it is NOT fully functional.  Can you tell us why you neglected to mention the missing metal piece?  [It sure looks like you were trying to get away with something.]

I'm afraid that you are at fault here ... and you have no chance of winning a dispute with eBay.  It's up to you whether you want to pay for the return shipping OR just refund in full.  I don't think it's a usable watch band in its current condition.

EDITED TO ADD:

A wise responder once advised:

Items should be described as if there were no photos.

Photos should be taken as if there were no Description.

so it was visible to you in the photo? just curious because that was his issue (the photos) of the refund, he's not claiming defective. ill refund him, but i probably will block to avoid issues in the future and go over my return policies/listings to make sure they're as accurate as possible, which up until now i haven't had a problem with buyers. thank you for your reply it was actually helpful.

@spookylittlelizardgirl
It is very difficult to notice something that 'isn't there' on our own.  Our minds just don't work that way.

Once I almost purchased a jacket that was missing the 'zipper pull'.  You had to hold onto the little ridge on the zipper to move it up or down.  The seller didn't think to mention this in the Description.

Because I'd learned to scrutinize photos before purchasing on eBay ... I eventually noticed the missing pull before committing to buy the item.  To me, this is similar to the missing part on your watch band.  Just sayin'.

The point of my emoji is to show that it is a friendly, attempt at clarification post, and not an attempt to be harsh.

 i don't wear watches or any jewelry as i am extremely allergic to most metals, i wasn't aware it was supposed to be there and sent him additional pictures in messages. im not sure what you think im trying "to get away with" , i haven't really had any issues with buyers and try to describe all my listings to best of my ability, send them more pictures and answer all their questions to the best of my ability. i have never tried "to get away with" anything on ebay as you are implying. he seemed to be more aware of what the item was supposed to have due to our messages back and forth before he placed his bid. but he's free to send it back as i have already provided a return label. 🙃
