So I got a message from ebay that a buy was requesting a return, and since I DIDN"T RESPOND they sent him a shipping label. Say what??
I've been using the Selling ebay page (ebay/selling/orders because that page has customer messages on each order, but there is no returns info on that page.
I did not recevie any message from ebay or the buyer before ebay says, gee, you didn't respond so we stepped in and sent a label... where was my message? Is this a glitch that I didn't get a message, or am I supposed to check my dashboard every two hours for returns becasue thats the only way I'll know about it?
Was I supposed to get a 1st message from ebay about this?
thanks!

Check your Account settings.
Communication Prefferences scroll down to Buyer.
Under Buyer select Show next to Buyer Activity.
Make sure Return Started is set to Real Time.
Save after changes.

Have you looked at the resolution center? If you have and there is nothing there then you likely had a phishing attempt, hopefully you didn't click on any links in the message.
If there is a return showing in the resolution center then you either missed the message or it never arrived (which does not mean it was never sent). Normally you would have received multiple messages plus notification in "the bell" and in My eBay plus perhaps every time you logged in.
Into your life it will creep

The return is listed as ongoing. But the message in my messages from ebay said I had till the 3rd to respond to the request, and since I didn't, they sent the buyer a shipping label.
I don't delete any messages in My messages, and there isn't one there. Nothing about a return. This is actually the 2nd time this has happened, no message in ebay about a problem. I would have immediately agreed to a return, this makes me look so bad in the buyers eyes, like I ignored their request! The shipment has till 5/11 to get back to me now.
but thank you, I thought one should recevie mesages from ebay about a problem.... but now its 2 times I haven't.... which is very odd. I guess I'll have to watch my dashboard close... and if a return comes in and again NO message from ebay, then I'll call them and ask why I'm not getting messages! So frustrating!

Hi @montana_echoes, is the return request in your Resolution Center now?
(I'm thinking no, even now.)
When eBay sends a return label after you ignore a return request --
it remains a return request, and does not escalate to a case, so no defect.

Messages from Ebay and Paypal have always been erratic, at least according to some. Pays to check resolution center every day, along with checking paypal.....

OP said the message from ebay said that the OP didn't respond to the return request so they "stepped in" and sent the buyer a return label. Doesn't that mean the buyer asked ebay to step in (buyer escalated it) so ebay sent the buyer the return label (OP will be charged for the return label) and OP will receive a "unresolved case" defect on their dashboard? It's my understanding that when ebay has to "step in" because the seller is either unresponsive or doesn't work out a solution with the buyer resulting in the buyer escalating it, the seller gets a "unresolved case" defect.

Why wait? You already have a history of this problem. You could call now.

You should also have received the message as an email. Do you check your eBay email address?
Make sure your settings in MyeBay allow for eBay to email you.

I think you nailed it! I've gone in and double checked... under SELLING the preference for "return started" was no notification. I"ve changed others to "Real Time" also, just in case this is a problem of combination of effects... and because gee, I want to be notified! Wow.... Now I'll keep a close watch on the dashboard and see if notices of return comes in to match return started... Thanks!!

So -- wondering if this is correct?
1. It's still a return request, not an escalated case.
2. You didn't get an unresolved by seller defect.
eBay helpfully sends a return label when you don't.

Happened to me a few months ago on another account, no messages or emails from ebay about a return request, just one message that buyer had uploaded a tracking number(the only reason I knew there was a retun). There wasn't an issue with my communication preferences, it was an ebay problem. Since then, I make sure to check the resolution center at least every other day since I can't count on ebay to notifiy me as they should.
As for the return, I called ebay, they could see I didn't get any messages about it, and they refunded the buyer on their dime(before the package even arrived to me).
