i don't think people should just be able to retract bids especially when they bid an item way up and then just retract it

Well, they can, so . . .

Better they retract, than either win and not pay, or win, pay and then return the item damaged.

Or win, pay, file a SNAD, get an automatic refund from eBay, and keep the item.

at least when it happens you get a message from ebay about it
I know I get messages. thats my cue to see if they are a serial bid retractor
any more than a few and it right to the BBL list
I have run 50,000 auctions so far and have seen it all with bid retractions
they make the rest of the bidders nervous and then they get the idea that some monkey business is going on

I think a seller should not be able to retract selling to a buyer even if they lose or break the item.

I agree that it is not right. We should have ebay police. They could go to their house and flog them with wet noodles.
