Why does ebay keep asking for my zip code for new listings? Isn't my city, state & country enough? Kind of an invasion of privacy.

ZIP Code is used as the basis for calculating postage. Just your town isn't specific enough.

It might be an invasion of privacy - IF you were the only person in that zipcode.

From Thailand?

Thailand doesn't have ZIP Codes. The term "ZIP Code" is used exclusively by the United States postal service. If you aren't in the US, you don't have a ZIP Code. Sounds to me like somebody is trying to fill out the Quick version of the listing form, which only accommodates US-based seller addresses.

Or, they live in the US and want to ship from Thailand, but have it appear to be from the US? Or some such thing.

Then they could enter just any random ZIP Code, or use flat rate shipping which doesn't require one.

1. Our lil' ole town of Covington, GA population, 14K, has two zip codes. Atlanta, Georgia population 498K plus tons of business addresses has 92 different zip codes. Go Figure.
2. Beside your city, state & country, you need an actual mailing address to determine your correct zip code for correct delivery of your mail or you just can have all your mail sent to a PO box (you'll have to pay a 6 month rental fee) and no one will know where you live = no invasion of your privacy but you won't be able to receive UPS & FeEx shipments.

I know--that's why I posted the question, since the OP is registered in Thailand. All the replies above mine seemed to assume or imply the OP was in the U.S.

I think that's probably the answer . . .

Zip codes are an official part of a US address. Why eBay would request it from a seller in Thailand is something I would not know if the seller were listing as themselves and the item being located there.
