Am I correct to understand that the category Home & Garden is excluded from the free insertion fees? Does it also impact the same way in a basic started store? I don't want to subscribe to a store if it is going to cancel out most of the profit and cost us more than what she has invested in making these packages.
I normally sell coins and after covid impacted my health, I haven't been active until 2 days ago. I am just starting to get back on, with only one listing to date. My daughter is making small gag gifts as stocking stuffers, and we listed one as a trial to get the bugs out before posting them all. looking at fees and possible store listing to save money. they are small $1.00-$3.00 listings at most and we are determining if it is worth the fees to sell on eBay platform.
I thought I have a limited amount of free insertion fees listings. I was charge $1.08 insertion fee and 40+ cents for final value fee & taxes. We lost 0.55 cents on this 0.99 cent (sold) listing after all the fees were deducted.
Why did I get an insertion fee? I read the pages of explanation of seller fees and am more confused than before.

Was it an insertion fee or a final value fee. Remember ebay takes at least 12.9% of the entire total PLUS 30 cents. Frankly, you make more money throwing your 99 cents items in the trash can instead of listing on ebay. Auctions are not what they used to be. Today's buyer is impatient. Auctions should be used for rare , hard or harder to find items. Items that will draw a bunch of bidders to compete and raise the price of the item.
It's also possible that you got charged for extras like gallery or 10 day listing or bold print. Always start an auction with a price that at least will cover ALL of your fees and leave you a buck or two for profit. You can always buy a Lotto ticket for a buck or a Coke at McDonald's. All sellers deserve some profit.

You were charged an insertion fee because you listed it as a ONE DAY Auction. This is almost never a good idea regardless of the extra fee.

If that was a one day auction, there is a dollar listing fee (more of a penalty) for those.
