I had a package arrive (through ebay g.s.p.) arrive in Japan faster than ones sent from MA to Kansas City, MO & Columbus, OH.
Little crazy, don't ya think?

I think that is random and few/far between. 99% of the time that is not the case.

Maybe because there haven't been a couple of major crippling ice storms between the US and Japan?

The package to Japan went to Kentucky first.

I have had the same experience with things that I have shipped internationally. Probably because it covers a lot of the miles in a plane without going through and/or back and forth between USPS regional sorting centers.
I have also purchased items internationally, although not on eBay, that have arrived 2-3 days before items I purchased from the west coast. Most recently a couple of items purchased out of Germany that arrived in Virginia in 4 business days.

I ship to Japan all the time. Transit time is 7-10 days. Japan has very fast customs clearances. My EU packages have taken much longer as of late. As long as 30 days 😞 This is via USPS. Usually over the pond in a few days and then weeks in customs.

Yeah, I send stuff to the USVI and it gets to a tiny island past Puerto Rico quicker than stuff gets to 2 states over. I think it is all in the distribution hubs. Sometimes the nearest hub in your state for a specific route is actually in the wrong direction.

I've had stuff going a couple towns over take longer than going a few states over. Seems like in MA they like to send stuff from the eastern part of the state to the western part and then back again east. CRAZY!

Like this one:
Milton is just outside of Boston, 12 miles north of me. However, they sent it out west to Springfield and then to Boston.

Wow, 5 business days to travel 15 miles straight up route 3. You could have drive it there faster yourself.

I'm not sure one example is enough to draw conclusions from. Here's my latest purchase from Japan:
