I think if ya offer free returns you should be exempt from negative feedback (IF the item is returned).
Or have I not thought this through enough?

I think your idea of being exempt from negative feedback makes sense if you offer free returns but I think your idea of offering free returns to begin with make little sense because its like spreading out a welcome mat for troublesome buyers to take advantage of you.

Top Rated Plus usually
When I did not accept returns (unless it was my fault). All of my returns were then my fault. And I'd throw the parts in the trash when they came back because they were no good.
Now that I accept returns, It's almost never my fault. And I can re-sell the parts again.
Funny how that works. A buyer will make a part fit the warranty in order to return it.

@gurlcat wrote:Maybe sellers shouldn't be so fearful of negative feedback. It's not the end of the world, in fact it makes no difference unless you have a pile of it. Heck even having a pile won't matter to some buyers because they don't check it.
Agree @gurlcat
It really does break down to taking care of customers and moving on. IMHO Sellers on this platform tend to be fearful of many things. For example, some sellers will refuse to answer questions from buyers and will block them for doing so. To many sellers fail at the basic level of customer service and would sleep better if they just took care of their customers appropriately.

Heck Yeah!
Why not make everything free returns with the option to leave feedback if the purchase is not returned? Buyers already can return anything they want (right or wrong) and if they get their money back, who cares? Buyers won't be in business for long if they are bad (cost of returns) and most sellers that post on these boards already offer free returns. Also limit feedback to transactions that sell more than $20.
or just abolish feedback completely and rely on seller stats.
It would be an easy fix that could be added to the next APP update.
We do? 🤔

The easiest course IMHO is for people to stop being led around by the nose by feedback. This is not first grade, we do not need gold stars. Did one act honourably? Do their best? If a mistake was made, do ones best to rectify it? Do people realise that you cannot please everyone? Are we adults in this room? Most people are fine...but some arent. Oh, well.

Only I see plenty of people who offer no returns at all, much less free ones.

One day you'll look back on when you thought this and laugh. I could list a myriad of ways, but the lessons stick better when you experience them yourself.
But just addressing the 'welcome mat' concept: what free returns actually spreads that for is a whole segment of GOOD buyers who will choose a listing with free returns over 'no' or 'buyer pays' listings, simply because they have the choice and they might as well take the safe bet. Everywhere else they shop offers no-nonsense free returns, so they think it's weird and suspicious when they see someone who doesn't. Are you not confident that they'll be pleased with what you send? -That's what they're thinking.
