Would you sell a usd 5000 object?

Read about problems around claims and not getting payed ...

That makes me (honest seller) a little hesitant.

Would you dare to sell a usd/eur 5000 object?

And if so. Under what conditions would you do that?

Thank you.

I am not experienced with real auction houses.

Need to find one which wants. Big ones didn't want. Small ones have a local market. I need ww market.

You mentioned Sotheby's and Christies don't want your item because it's too low. Forget about them unless you have something worth 50k or 100k. Your 5K item belongs in an auction house that loves to accept consignments worth that much while at the same time they aren't looking for consignments worth only a couple hundred bucks.  I didn't realize until now that you're from the Netherlands. Here in the US there are plenty of auction houses that offer in-house bidding as well as world wide online bidding. Anyway, if you sell it on eBay, do what krazzykat and reallynicestamps said.

Probably been said before and will be again but .... "Heck no".  I stopped selling anything here at all. If the platform isn't abusing sellers, scammers are, and high-dollar items are magnets.    When it comes to high-value items, it's local auction house only or cash and carry.  If you have to, look at auction houses elsewhere in the Eurozone.

I wouldn't sell it here. When I have valuable collections I break them into pieces to make sure I don't have anything more than about $500. (And even then, I'll only sell something for $500 if the cost is super low and I can take a hit if it goes south... which has actually happened on a $500 sale. Thankfully the coin was Arabic and no one at the store could read it, so it ended up in the junk bin... too bad I didn't get to keep the profits).

I'm not new. As long on eBay as you are. And sales as profession.

And scam isn't new either 😉

eBay became new with all changes.

Unless you are selling regularly, your FB shows you to scammers  as a newbie.

And a target.

But I agree, the reason you are a newbie and the reason you would be a target is that eBay has changed over and over.

Two thoughts.

Would you consider shipping internationally by listing on the UK site, which does offer GSP/eIS a program set up by eBay as a Seller Protection?

A nice day trip on the ferry and drop off your item at the nearest post office to the ferry dock.

Also depending on the item, we have has some success with philatelic material on DelCampe Auctions in Italy.  There are also some internationally recognized auction houses in Germany that might be interested, but I am only peripherally aware of them.

Frankly after the "ringing "mess some years ago, I would not trust either of the two you mentioned as a seller.

I would do it in a minute, I have never sold a single $5,000 item but have sold $3,000 single items and 2-3 K orders are not that uncommon, I sell mostly industrial type items and while it could happen it is a very low fraud category.

Guess I was not clear enough.  Should have said: Why are you wanting to sell an item for 5K -- on eBay?

No, No,No. with the way ebay's supports the scammer buyers it is not a fair system. ebay supports scammers . it is a one sided kangaroo court.

What are you saying, can you clarify this response?

If you don't agree with making a listing more of an ad for something like this, do you have a better idea for safely selling this rare item?  The only safe way to sell this item is verifiable cash in hand.

..or in a real brick and mortar auction house with a reserve on it.  That way your $5000 item doesn't sell for $42.50, which can and does happen.
