Will tariffs with Canada apply to eBay sales?

If I ship from Canada to the US will the 25% tariff apply to eBay sales going from Canada to the US?

If so, who pays the 25%, the sender or the receiver?

Thank you

Will tariffs with Canada apply to eBay sales?

From what I understamd...

No, they won't apply to ebay sales.

However if I'm a ebay seller importing goods from Canada, they will apply.

But I wouldn't worry or think about it too much.

I'm in Canada. Right now we don't have to worry about tariffs for low value items because of de minimus. If your item is under $800, sales tax is collected on the sale and it's duty/tariff free. I'm using a shipper (Stallion Express) that is allowed to operate their business as long as de minimus stays in effect.

For the tariffs of 25% when that starts on Feb 1 (if that happens, some of us think it's a bargaining chip to get Canada to comply with new Trump demands), we don't know who will pay, how it will be collected, or anything like that, until it is a thing and starts happening. I would presume there would be announcements on ebay. You can also go to the Canadian eBay Selling board to discuss, we are discussing the tariffs over there.

The Trump tax applies to the importer. So, an American buying from another country will pay the tax and presumably pass it on to the consumer.

But I'm asking about eBay sales so the buyer isn't normally a reseller.

If someone (an individual, not a company) in the Unites States buys a $20 item from me on eBay and I'm shipping from Canada, will tariffs apply in these situations or is it only for large commercial imports?

I would wait until an official position is taken by the US Government as well as the Canadian Government.  It is just a point of negotiation between the two countries on specific issues surrounding the boarder.

They may wind up applying tariffs to goods from specific industries opposed to individual items sold over the internet through various venues.  For example, if I Buy 5 Lbs of Tim Horton's Original Blend Coffee from a Canadian internet venue I might not be charged a tariff on that purchase.  However, Cedar shingles might be subject to US customers paying a tariff on them in an effort to encourage US customers to buy Cedar shingles from US manufacturers.

Whether one sells to Canada or vice versa on eBay it is all speculation at this point.

as was already mentioned, right now the US buyer pays no taxes/duties if the value of the item is less than $800 (there may be some exception for special commodities). Who knows how things will work out if the 25% tariff is imposed, i.e. whether the de minimis threshold remains or not. I think that 25% will apply to every purchase (business, individuals). I presume, it would work the same way as VAT in EU. When someone from EU buys from me, ebay automatically charges the buyer VAT (usually 20%) and ebay then remits this collected tax to the revenue authority in the buyer's country.

I think OP is wondering if they sell something on eBay, would eBay items have the tariff, and whether eBay is collecting it (like they collect taxes and import fees for Canada through EIS), or not.

Because of de minimus, it's not a concern for items less than $800, but I suppose if the tariff passes and marketplaces have to collect it, there will be no avoiding tariffs on imported goods, even from eBay sellers.

This is the first OP I've seen on this forum about the tariffs (in regards to selling from Canada).

There is significant freaking out on the Canadian forum about tariffs (that and the 220 replies to the post on having to provide Canadian SIN to Revenue Canada so they can tax sales). Many articles on that have been posted in various threads. I for one am happy to play on an even playing field with regards to income tax, not happy about tariffs on Canadian goods.

The whole point of the tariff was to tax the foreign company, but that's not going to work because the importer is the one who's going to pay (and if the importer is a business, they pass those tariffs to the end customer). So the plan to not tax US citizens anymore is hogwash because that's exactly how the tariff is going to work.

My suggestion to deal with this right now is to ship with an agency like Stallion Express or Chit Chats, they are able to operate due to de minimus, so taxes to the importer are not a concern with that because the agency makes the shipment become a domestic USA shipment.

Yes, I read your other post about using Stallion Express ... I am sure there is and will be continued speculation on this subject ... I'm just going to wait for the final decision(s) after all the negotiations are concluded.

Is Stallion Express an accepted shipper for eBay's tracking requirement?

Actually, yes they are. I can use their tracking for international shipments if needed (where other services are used, I don't necessarily know who the partner carriers are, but Stallion's tracking works on eBay).

Chit Chats, which is another one of these carriers, also has integrated tracking.

However I can't message a buyer a Stallion tracking link, it's not white listed, so the message won't go through.

You're right that there's lots of speculation and we don't know anything until it's announced and action is taken. But talking about it is how some of us are coping with the uncertainty, trying to figure out every scenario so we can figure out what to do when it happens.

I replied to you, Canadians don't have to comply except to be protected in the event of an INR.

Obviously I am not familiar with Stallion Express ... I thought they were a shipper like DHL, UPS, etc. thus the question about tracking with eBay to protect against an INR ... my apologies for the misunderstanding.

No apologies needed. I try to explain that Stallion Express is my shipper in any posts that I have questions about shipping (since I don't expect people to remember or read everything I post).

Basically their job is to collect up packages in Canada and send them by truck to USPS and UPS across the border. Their tracking is integrated with USPS tracking, so that if you track on their website or use their tracking on eBay, the partner carrier (UPS/USPS) will update tracking too. They are also partnered with Royal Mail, the Australian Mail Service, Netherlands mail and Asendia.
