Will eBay Clothing Sellers Need To Compete With Amazon Prime Wardrobe?

The clothes are sent to your home before you pay for them.  You try them on and purchase only those you desire.  Will this become a necessity for selling on eBay?

Will this become the norm for eCommerce?

Have you heard of this new service?
Here's more about it:

All Amazon Prime members can now try clothes before they buy
https://www.engadget.com/2018/06/20/amazon-prime-wardrobe-open-to-all-subscribers/

"Amazon has been testing out a fee-free clothing-box service in the vein of Stitch Fix since last June. Prime Wardrobe allowed customer to try out selected clothing before buying; customers would only be charged for the items they kept. Until now, the service has been invite only, but today Amazon expanded its new feature to all Prime customers.

Prime Wardrobe items are limited to women's, men's, kids' and baby clothing and accessories sold directly by Amazon.com. You can add anywhere between three and eight items to your box, and once you check out, your selections will arrive between four and six business days (no free two-day shipping here, unfortunately). You have a week to try on the items and decide if you are keeping them without being charged. Once you decide what you want to keep, you can check out in Your Orders. Anything you keep, or that isn't returned to Amazon, is charged to your credit card."

Thanks,
Lynn

Amazon is just playing catch up with this program. There are already several sites offerong subscription type services where a box of clothing is sent monthly, buyers can pick and choose, keep some, return the rest or return them all. Buyers are billed only for the things they keep (plus the monthly subscription fee).

Buyers sign up with their favourite brands, styles, sizes etc. and the pre-packs are created to their specifications.

What would happen if you do not send anything back.   Amazon charges your credit card.

How would that work with paypal for those who just pay out of their account?

It wouldn't but Amazon or the other sites with this type of system don't accept PayPal for that type of transaction. You have to use a credit card and pre-authorize the after the fact charging to your card.

That program is already in place on ebay - it is called Free Shipping/Free Returns.

And note that not all the clothing is available for Prime Wardrobe on Amazon.  And of course, Amazon will be monitoring abuses closely.  Something ebay will probably not do since ebay doesn't own anything that would be at risk.

You would have to be a merchant who accepts credit cards.

How many small sellers are set up to do this?

@retrose1

Everytime I see those Ads it makes me cringe. AND assume it relates to NEW clothing? Although your comment is more than appropriate lolol. Pre-owned, vintage Rentals.

Amazon doesn't need to be profitable. That is the main problem with them.

Amazon, as a corporation, is very profitable.  Jeff Bezos had a specific strategy of spending (instead of declaring profits) early on to build for the future, and it is paying off.  For example, check the revenues and profits from AWS -- Amazon Web Services (the Cloud).   Amazon stock is currently $1750/share (not missing a decimal point) so it appears currently to be considered a very good investment.

eBay's business model is so different overall it's almost impossible to compare the two.

The companies that are doing this as their primary business model are already losing money as the merchandise goes missing - either in the mail or the "buyers" claim they never got them or "forgot" to return them.

Amazon is NOT very profitable AT ALL. The Amazon Marketplace has never shown a profit in their entire history. In the past few years they have reported tiny profits (in relative terms) which have almost entirely come from Amazon Web Services. Reporting a Billion Dollar profit on revenues of a quarter Trillion is hardly very profitable.

Jeff Bezos has become a very rich man because he continues to offload shares to those who are convinced that there is no upper limit to the value of Amazon shares. The day of reckoning will come as it always does.

I've had this for a year, never used it. It's not much different than Paypal Pay After Delivery.

If buyers misuse the service, I'm sure they will be removed from Prime.

Like all billionaires, Bezos has his fingers in many pies.  He was an original investor in Google and also  early in Airbnb and Uber.  That's just to name a few ...
