@pburn wrote:People should be using a random password generator service. I use one offered by Google, which generates a random, complex password and stores it (or offers to store it, by the user's choice) in my Google account. The service also scans for breaches, weak passwords a user may have created, a list of duplicated passwords, etc.
You honestly don't even need that as long as you just use different passwords for every site and make sure that they're strong (8+ characters, letters & numbers, symbols, capitalization, etc.). Most hackers aren't going to put in a ton of time and effort trying to crack passwords, they go for the low-hanging fruit (easily-guessed passwords, passwords that have been used with that email address on other sites, things like that) because that's quick and easy.

Never thought that would/could happen but it did/does.
I have a lifelong friend whose identity was stolen and it was a nightmare for her for months here in our own hometown. Guess who stole it? The State of Tennessee had given (a select number of) prison inmates the opportunity for busy work entering old state info into a new database. Our licenses used to have the SSN printed right there on them. Duh...

except for those sellers and buyers who are using their phones, so many people receive emails, texts that they are being exposed through other means, they click on a link that appears to be from someone they know...and Viola.!!! they have just given their information out to any number of people who will use whatever method they have at their disposal to create havoc!!!

PayPal is requiring all members who may have been affected by this to update their passwords, the next time they log in to PayPal.
So as long as people log in to PayPal promptly, and update their passwords if necessary, there won't be any problems.

My thoughts ~~ My eBay, PayPal, and Amazon accounts were each hacked within a few weeks of each other a few years ago.
I had to change my passwords and have eBay Trust & Safety remove an item that the hacker had listed for sale on my account.
It was a negligible hassle ... and I don't waste my time worrying about it happening again. 99.9% (approximately) of what we humans worry about won't ever happen. 😊

Thats another one trying to take advantage of the older equipment that would ship with a default manufacturer password that users would often not bother to change. It could also take advantage of users who program the same password on every account.
Our household router came with a unique password that is totally incoherent... its not just random letters and numbers but also includes punctuation marks such as an Equals sign.

Everyone needs various passwords. Get a notebook and jot them down if you don't use one of those services. And don't use the word PASSWORD as a password. That was a very, very popular password years ago.

My favorite was a couple of years ago when people were claiming Disney Plus had been hacked... Disney had to put out a statement telling people not to use Disney princess names as their passwords. They hadn't been hacked, people were just using Disney character names as their passwords and then being shocked - SHOCKED! - when hackers guessed their passwords.

Tips for keeping your eBay account secure | eBay
I personally use 2 step verification on almost all my accounts, everywhere, if available.
Sure it takes a couple of extra clicks to type a code in.

This doesn't happen to me because I don't see ads and I don't get phishing emails. I often forget that there's a whole industry based on internet advertising.
