Why does Ebay allow a buyer to open an INR case when uploaded tracking already shows as delivered?

As in the title, when tracking is uploaded and showing "Delivered", why would Ebay still allow the buyer to open an Item Not Received case? Seems intuitively stupid and if nothing else, deceptive on Ebay's part. The package shows delivered. If your neighbor stole it, that is not directly my problem.

They automate returns and other features that seemingly go against sellers, and cannot just throw us this one little bone by also automating INRs to first check and see what the delivery status is?

Just as you stated in your post, it's possible that it was misdelivered, not actually delivered or was part of a fraudulent tracking scam.

If your buyer opened a claim, you must respond with the tracking number. It will eventually close in your favor.

Important: Don't assume that you don't have to respond just because tracking shows on the order.

Just because tracking shows it was delivered, doesn't mean it was.

Had a package scanned as delivered a couple years and didn't get it.

Didn't get for a few days after it showed delivered.

It wasn't ESE, just a small package that dropped down under the seat.

So, how can 'they' check on a status until you give 'them' some information?

Information such as the TRACKING NUMBER.

@outdoorbrands4less

You need to see the bigger picture.  Think like a buyer.  What would you do if you had a purchase you made, with the tracking showing delivered and you have no clue where the package is?  Ebay has this same issue for some buyers for a variety of reasons.  Some of which the seller would NOT be held responsible for, but the buyer still wants to try and find what they paid for and that should be something we ALL can understand.

There are reasons that would fall under the buyer's responsibility such as a porch pirate.  But unfortunately we have some sellers that actively scam our buyers using tracking numbers on stuff delivered elsewhere in the buyer's zip code to fool the system.  It is a big problem and one I personally have been bitten by TWICE here on Ebay.

Chances are you will be fine.  Just be kind to your buyer.  Suggest they talk with their carrier tomorrow and see if they remember where they left the package.  It might be on their neighbors porch.  But be kind, they are missing their product and their money.

@gwens*4saleitems*

If the Seller purchased shipping through eBa (which I think most sellers do), it's accessible to buyer in their eBay account.

@albertabrightalberta

Once you respond with the tracking number, how long does it typically take to close?

 In a messed up sort of way, leaving the INR option open DOES throw a bone to sellers .... certain types of sellers anyway.  When a seller accidentally sends the wrong item, or packs it in a cruddy envelope that rips and the item falls out before delivery, or pulls an outright scam by knowingly shipping some kind of junk instead of the valuable item in the listing ..... many buyers unfortunately choose "Item not received" from the menu, because they literally did not receive the item they paid for!  But then all those sellers have to do is respond by pasting the tracking number in, and BAM the case closes in the seller's favor.

Why does Ebay allow a buyer to open an INR case when uploaded tracking already shows as delivered?

Because some sellers consider the end goal of an INR to be "the customer got his item" and not "I won the dispute".

Thankfully, eBay does not automatically assume that tracking is correct and that sellers are not interested in helping their customers.

That can vary @adamcartwright .  If there is any kind of scan movement on the tracking in the past 7 days, Ebay will keep it open.
