Why are buyers buying multiple items but paying for each individually?

I've had a this happen a LOT lately - buyers will make like 5-10 purchases and pay for each one, THEN message me and ask to combine shipping.  I don't have any of my listings set to require immediate payment, so what is going on here?  It makes it a huge pain to dig through transactions and figure out combined shipping then send partial refunds.

Some buyers have told me they don't get options to commit to buy without having to then pay immediately.  Am I missing something here?  Does it matter if any items were best offer purchases?  I do have a lot of auto-deny/auto-accept best offers set up.  I don't know what to tell these people.  Most of my buyers don't have any problems with this stuff.

Rude. You’re blaming the wrong party. The other day I put three things in my cart and checked out together. eBay broke it into two transactions. Why? I can tell you it wasn’t because I’m not that smart. I understand very well how the cart works and mostly doesn’t.

i tried to request a total from another seller but the cart wouldn’t allow it because the seller had

ipr. The seller removed ipr and it still didn’t allow the combine request. The seller had to add make an offer and that finally worked but I set my own price.

once again I cannot believe a seller is here with their selling ID making rude comments about paying buyers. Many sellers wonder why their sales are off. Here’s your sign.

I'm rude because i think some of my buyers are not very smart?   I guess  your buyers are all smart.  I guess that makes you a better person and a better seller than me.

Sure, i'll take the blame that "many sellers" sales are low.  It's all because of my rudeness.  Sorry folks!

I lost 2 sales because of the cart a couple of months ago. I tried to help them figure it out, but they just gave up.

Last week I had another multi-item buyer. Shipping showed up as over $26 for 5 items weighing a total of less than 3 pounds. I finally calculated the shipping to her zip and adjusted the shipping on the items.

As a seller this happens all the time.  Occasionally I get the "please send me a total" messages but rarely from US buyers.  I don't have IPR on any of my listings but even if I did, how would international buyers get around it?  As a buyer, it also happens all the time.  Defend the stupid cart all you like but no matter what I do, I almost never can request a new total.  Usually comes with the message that "the seller does not combine shipping" which is completely untrue.  Of course none of this applies with auctions because you aren't using the cart.

Don't forget eBay gets 10% of the shipping costs.  And there are no FVFs refunded for issuing partials.

You have to have a combined shipping rule specified in your shipping preferences in order to provide combined shipping.  Unfortunately, some buyers aren't that savvy and ask for a discount after purchase which I can't do as I have to pay the PayPal fees for each transaction.  They have to put all the items in their cart and commit to buy without paying and then request the combined shipping invoice.  This is what they have to do when they are different listing items.  You also have to have the Immediate Payment Requirement unchecked in those listings.

I've wonder why this happens, too, ever since I first sold 2 teacups in 2019 and the buyer paid double shipping. I just looked at the eBay page "My eBay: Combined Payments and Shipping Discounts" to see what was in my profile. It said:

Combined payments

Not allowed (buyers cannot combine payments).

So I thought "Aha!" and decided I needed to change that. But when I clicked on the Edit hyperlink, nothing happened. So then I tried going to "Site Preferences" but did not see anywhere there a setting to enable or disable Combined Payments, either. (I would have had to have had "Combined Payments" enabled to provide for "Combined Shipping." In the buyer's case, I just sent her a small refund.) Maybe "combining" is only available to Top Rated or high volume sellers? It's puzzling.

The "commit to buy" part is missing. You don't get to request a total.  You pay for all the items with all the shipping added or you don't get the stuff.

From the eBay Cart, when you Request Total from Seller:

You can X the items you don't want to combine, then click Commit to Buy.

I do not have that "view".  Nor is that option available to me.

I think the problem is people are using the ebay mobile

apt and it doesn't work correctly for auto combine shipping

next time I get one, I will ask if they are shopping by phone. If anyone ask if I do combine shipping I just say it will only work on a regular computer

an not a phone app.  That helps with the buyers that ask.
