Why I'm quitting EBay

After years of selling, I deleted all of my listings today - including ones with bids. Why? Because EBay accepted a fraudulent return request from one of my buyers, and told me I'd be paying for return shipping and issuing a refund. This despite multiple phone calls and messages from me, and the proof given in e-mails sent from the buyer himself.

I was always honest and prompt as a seller. I always communicated clearly with buyers. My listings were accurately described. And EBay stubbornly refused to take any of that into account, instead choosing to honor a deceptive, flat-out fraudulent return demand. As long as the buyer claims "item not as described," EBay will ignore the facts and rule against the seller. Now my PayPal account has a negative balance in excess of $120. This is my reward for being a straight shooter - and for putting money into EBay's already-fat wallets.

It's a drag, because I made supplemental income this way, and had many pleasant experiences. But I refuse to be robbed as a direct result of corporate greed and apathy towards those who make them money.

EBay is like the phone company was about 40 years ago. They know you have limited options, so they don't care about messing you over. But I'm ready to explore my other options now, as I refuse to sell through EBay anymore.

To answer your last question first -who has my back on ebay.  Ebay under very limited circumstances if I follow their rules to the letter, and even then who knows?  But I made a conscious decision when I signed up.  I knew what was what right up front and knew I was taking a risk.  And if it goes pear shape, well I was warned.  And thankfully my husband is the breadwinner, I supplent with a part time and seasonal jobs.  I thank G-d unlike a lot of people here I am not dependant on ebay for my family to survive.

Again, when you go into a store, it is you and possibly me, when I do B&M during Christmas.  But even then, we are told, the last thing the floor manager wants the whole store to hear is an unhappy customer.  So we are told to bend all the way back to make him happy.  But of course stores now keep track and there is a limit as to how far it will go.

But unlike stores where I see what is coming back, ebay is a non seeing 3rd party.  They have no clue who is telling the truth.  And photos can be of anything, not necessarily what you sent.  Video can be doctored.  So they err on the side of the buyer because to do otherwise would be to commit ebay suicide.

You again refer to assault.  A very serious crime.  Police should be very aggressive.

What you are talking about on ebay is a civil matter.  You file with the carrier and the police and take the scammer to court.

The first you pursue at all cost as your civic duty.  But for the second imo you decide if the cost to do so (dollars) outweighs what you lost.  Because like most here, I do not have deep pockets.

From your post sounds like this is the first time this has happened?

If so, it seems silly imo to stop selling after countless years just because of this, which has happened or will hapen to pretty much everyone eventually.

Yes it is a cost of doing business.  B&M stores have shoplifters.  Online venues have this.

Yes that's true . However B&M store managers aren't helping the shoplifters to commit   their crimes and then clubbing the employees over the head for trying to stop them.  Tulips

But B&M store managers have eyes on what is happening in real time.  Ebay does not.

Speaking of sexual assaults and mothers . Not sure anyone remembers the old J.J Newberry  department stores  or not . However I was with my mom  there one day when I was a little girl , about 8 years old.  Some man walked by and put his hands on her behind . My mom was a feisty southern woman  who didn't believe in calling the police . I watched her pick up the nearest heavy item  and she clobbered him right across the back of his  shoulders . The guy just kept walking ,, he never turned around or said one word . I do believe he made the right decision  at that point . Tulips

I am having a hard time understanding how posters are comparing sexual assault (a very serious crime, and a felony if convicted) to the five finger discount.

And all four items were listed after this thread was started. Kinda takes the teeth out of the OP's argument, IMO.

I have my own back on eBay.

For every sale I take 5% and move it into a separate PayPal account. I do not touch that money for 6 months unless there is an issue where I need to refund.

I take an additional 1% and said it is that same PayPal account to cover buyer fraud.

I also keep a rolling Reserve in my main PayPal account that is enough money to cover the most expensive item I sold in the last 6 months, plus enough to cover the next most expensive item I sold.

Yes internet fraud sucks. But we have to live with it, we can take steps to mitigate the damages done to ourselves by managing our finances.

Now at the end of 6 months I consider that money free and clear. My secondary eBay account is getting ready to find me a trip to Ireland for myself, my husband and my son.

A few. I have 100 percent positive feedback, and numerous successful transactions, and repeat customers. But this is the first time EBay has granted the return of a 150 dollar item that cost me more than 50 to ship, even though they have access to e-mails that demonstrate that I'm in the right.

I certainly wouldn’t throw away my business for one instance of this. You can easily mitigate this type of thing in your pricing. That’s how brick and mortar businesses do it for the expected “shrinkage”.

I’ve never run my business expecting ebay to “protect” me.

What was the item and what did the buyer do to incriminate himself?

Emerald, first of all, I'm sorry I went off on you, I shouldn't type when I'm upset. As we see it, there is NOTHING about eBay transactions that is like anything in the real world. And when we unlock that door every morning we not only put our rep, but also our very lives on the line, every single day. Some think its a risk, the cost of doing buisness on eBay. We say no, because buyers and sellers have little or no control over the outcome. And because of poor policy this place is becoming Five Finger Discount Central.

That's only because you didn't read the descriptions.

It was a drum. After he bought it, he revealed that he just wanted some of the parts to retrofit another (vintage) drum he had. Had he asked relevant questions before paying, I could have answered him.

When he didn't consider the parts suitable for his purpose, he claimed the item was "not as described." I told EBay what he was doing, and they just let him do it. And they have access to the messages in which he admitted all of this.

For whatever reason, there is less fraud on ALL other outlets I use, including those that have their own dispute resolution systems (which are less ridiculous) and where credit cards and PayPal are also in play.

I have seen statements that there is less fraud on other sites, but they usually qualify that with sales are almost non existent as well.  Less sales will result in less fraud.

If you used the USPS, get revenge on the criminal by calling his local USPS delivery location and notifying the manager that one of his customers is engaging in postal fraud, which is a federal crime.

Report the theft to your local police and ask them to report it to buyer's local PD.  If they won't, then you should do it.  Keep the theft report for your taxes.  It's a loss.

If you're on facebook, contact both eBay for Business and eBay Newsroom with the details and ask they why they allow this.

Sorry this happened to you, OP.  I understand you are upset.  I just hope you weren't charged FVF on the listings that had bids that you cancelled.
