Which item do you REGRET selling the most?

I had a recent discussion about sharing your biggest flip - and it received a great number of replies - I even find myself rereading the replies often. I recently experienced remorse for selling an item of mine, a German made weather station that I discovered at a thrift store. It was a little beaten up, but it still worked perfectly. I let it go for a great margin - but well below what they are worth in my opinion. I do emotionally *regret* selling it, though...I was wondering if there are any flippers/sellers out there that have a longing for items they sold? What was that item you came across that you fell in love with, and then ended up selling? I know one day when I'm financially able, I'll buy another one of those weather stations! 😉

Re: Which item do you REGRET selling the most?

Okay your post made me remember a true story, honestly this is what happened.

About 20 years ago we were having a yard sale. I had a middle sized oil painting to get rid of. This painting was nothing but a landscape and had an actual hole from a drunk friend putting his finger through it. However the frame was good enough.

Guy comes around, picks up the painting and asks how much. My friend Rod was sitting in his lounge chair watching and I replied $5 dollars. Guy immediately smiles and reaches for his money. Rod turns to me and says loudly, how do you know that's not an expensive painting that this guy will go and sell for a lot of money.

I bend towards the guy and whisper that it has a hole in it. He smiles and says that he knows, he just likes the frame and winks at me. So I asked, want to have some fun with my friend? Tell him that you will flip this for a bunch of money when I leave.

I take the money and immediately walk away. I turn around in time to see guy bend down and say something to Rod. Rod's face turned purple, not red but a deep dark purple, down to his windpipe. I thought we'd given Rod a stroke for a moment. Then Rod turns and looks at the guy, who busts up laughing, then looks over at me and I am laughing, then Rod starts laughing. I asked later what the guy said. The guy had told him that he was actually an art critic and that I had mistakenly just sold him an original Van Gogh that he was going to sell for ten million....

I regret selling most of the personal items I sold to prevent going bankrupt due to the pandemic

I sold one of the actual board shorts worn  by Jason Momoa in the Baywatch Hawaii television series to some fan in Europe. It came with a photo of him in the shorts and a certificate of authenticity.

I bought them for $200. I was delighted to sell them for $500.

I think that because of his popularity now, those shorts are worth a lot more now.

Re: Which item do you REGRET selling the most?

I regret selling a cookbook sort of thing from about the teens or twenties, maybe even earlier.  It's been awhile so I don't even remember the title, but it was so well written!  It was from the manager of a high end hotel/restaurant and had tips on how to run it, recipes, how to treat the guests, etc.  It read like poetry.  Leather bound black with gilt lettering (I think), acid free paper, a big book.  I got good money for it, and read some of it but I wish I had kept it, or read all of it before letting it go.  We needed the money then...

I also sold a double sided Vargas calendar for a pittance, should have known better.  It was original and in awesome condition.  Had all twelve months.  Sigh.

The biggest faux pas I ever made was a Robbie the Robot in the box.  Sold it for 10.00 at the Flea Market about forty years ago.  I still haven't had the courage to see what it was worth...so please don't tell me.

Stay safe everyone!

You really need to stop starting these threads.  I end up looking everything up and spend way too much time totally enjoying them.  After the other fee/shipping complaint/argumentative thread I just wasted time reading, I needed this.

My regret is a 14kt gold bangle bracelet that was engraved with my birth year.  It was beautiful and I wore it to a wedding, but since I paid 5cents for it, I felt I should sell it.  Now it would be worth wayyy more than when I sold it.

@voguevintage Those advertising pieces are magnificent and I can understand why you have sellers remorse. Would have loved to seen the DQ Menu board as I have an original Big boy one. Did put it on ebay until I kept getting lowballed by a fella.

I know I'll be on the lookout for these items on my junking trips this next year!

I'd love to see that lamp! I love lamps that have motion to them!

@vintageantique77. Oh another one of your interesting fun topics! Well on EBay I sold an old boat lamp, the name escapes me but I believe it was from Denmark, solid brass.

It was stunning and it rocked back and forth in it's holder. I had it on auction and it sold for around $68? ( it was given to me) but I really wished I would have kept it. The buyer was thrilled.

In keeping with your title " which item do you regret selling the most"? There is 3 items and while working at my Thrift shop (Nevada) in 2017, I was cleaning up some very dirty large duffle bags to sell instead of throwing them out we could get $5 bucks each.

So here I am on the floor cleaning and spraying these things when a man came to my door and stated " I want those"..."ok" I said " let me finish cleaning...." He interupted " never mind cleaning HOW MUCH"? I stood up and said " for you? $15 each!! he grabbed them and left the store.

Now I didn't think anymore about it, we all knew who he was as he lived in our town and was a creep and very arrogant.

What happened to those bags I sold him? They ended up holding his assault weapons in Las Vegas on 1 October.

Holy moley! :0

That is....shocking! Did you recognize him right away on TV?!?

That is amazing...

I'm a member since 1997 (other account that I lost the password for)

and a seller a couple years later.

eBay used to be auction only.

When BIN's came in .. I didn't understand them?  But everyone seemed to be using them.

So ...

I had three of those Franklin Mint framed prints that were of famous cities.. NYC, London, Paris.  Sterling silver paper made them up.  I think there was 4? 6?  issued, but I found three of them at a thrift store for $3.00 each.

I listed all three at 24.99 each, excited how high they could go .. because there were no others listed, and back then, Completed Listings went back an entire year .. and those prices got high at times.

But... BIN's.

Sounded like a good idea, so I put 34.95 BINs on all three auctions.

Next day, all BIN'd sold at that price.

Shocked me, for some silly reason.

Sale went perfect.

Weeks later, saw my buyer had resold them under the same account for 75.00 or higher.  I think NYC went for over a hundred.

Sigh...

Lynn

Ah yes. There is still a racket for buying on eBay - to SELL on eBay. I've done it a handful of times. Most sellers have different buying and selling accounts to prevent the connection. I will check out a buyer's account to see if it is a strictly buying account when I suspect I may have priced something too low - but these days I rarely feel bad about leaving them some room to flip.  Still is worth a sigh, regardless.
I feel your pain!

I purchased a bag of high end clothing from friend. I didn't recognize one of the brands (it wasn't particularly pretty dress either)and was rushing, so didn't do much research. I listed it for $69, figuring I'll check the next day how much it is worth. It sold literally within a few hours.

Quickly did some research-it was a European company that costs over $1000 a piece!

Lesson learned: Do your research!

I used to hate those at the thrift stores that casually search items in plain sight on their phones for values...I thought it was just....just....something...I've become what I hate lol. I never go into a store without my phone...It's paid for itself 300 fold...Gotta love it.
