Did you mean:

When you ask me for a discounted price, and I agree, please don't insult me by trying to go lower.

Ok, this has happened a couple times now and just happened again.

Usually it goes like this...

Buyer: Hey! I got an offer from you last week, can I still get it for that price/is that offer still good?.

(As any seller knows, I can't send a 2nd offer to the buyer if the first one was one of the anonymous watcher offers)

Me: Sure! Unfortunately I can't send you it again, as EBay limits us to sending one offer per buyer, so I'm opening "Make Offer" feature on the listing, please submit it and we'll get it taken care of. (Usually, but not always, I clearly state the price. Sometimes I don't if the buyer already mentioned the price.)

Later, I get an offer from the buyer for a buck or couple bucks less than the agreed upon price. I'm nice and I send back the counter offer and put in the message a reference to how this was already the agreed upon price... when I almost rather decline and block over the shenanigans.

You passed up the discount before. You're coming back asking for it again. I could just say no. I say yes and you disrespect me by trying to skim a buck or couple bucks off. Seriously?

Also, i know some will say, instead of making "Best Offer" feature, just drop the Buy It Now price and have then BIN it, and I've done that before, but I usually only do that when I know the person is going to do it right away. Too often I have buyers wait 24 hrs or so and sometimes never come back, I rather not drop BIN price and forget about it if buyer doesnt come back

It's SO much better when the buyer convinces themselves that they better but it fast before someone else does.

Honestly I end up sitting back and laughing. Like literally someone bought something and I mentioned I had the remaini g varieties from that same set, he attempted to negotiate a discount from me, and within a matter of like 2-3 minutes, as I was typing my reply agreeing to discount the bulk purchase, he just bought the whole set and said "I didn't want to wait because i was worried someone else would buy them first!"

Not the first time, not the last. Always gotta love it!

I'm "tough" because the OP's complaint is non sensical. eBay is a flea market, not a grocery store. Haggling prices IS the norm here. It has been forever. And while the OP's poor little feelers may have been hurt by that big meanie potential buyer, it all stemmed from the OP making the BUYER an offer.

Maybe the OP didn't care for the offer they ended up with, but the OP didn't do anything to stop the situation from happening. I can't blame the buyer for asking for a BETTER deal. Time had passed since the first offer, so it was obvious people were not knocking down the OP's door to buy it. I can assure you when the OP buys inventory, they are seeking the best deal possible. You can't fault the buyer for trying to do the same.

er go out of business.

There are not many businesses that make a profit on every single sale. Ever see a clearance section? Ever see close outs? You think they are making profits? You ever hear of loss leaders for store?

Clearance sections haven't been marking down below cost since the recession of 2008 in most large retailers.

Closeouts are often underwritten by the new supplier whose products are replacing those products in the store.

Loss leaders are often underwritten by Market Development Funds provided by the manufacturer.

If a store is going to take a loss, they are more likely to sell product to a liquidator than waste valuable shelf space in their store on a product which has failed to meet expectations.

What one sees is often a one dimensional view of the reality of retail because buyers only need to see one dimension and retailers who do not make it to "heavy hitter" status are not aware of how manufacturers deal with those select retailers.

When I get a random message from someone saying "Can I buy this at a discounted price?" on an item I'm already priced pretty low on...and I've sold tons of the item at this price and higher prices... I decide to go read their feedback for other sellers. I found that the person had left neutral/negative feedback for more than 7.5% of his purchases (460 total FBs...) Yep, BBL-ed that guy.

I can't count the number of bullets I've dodged and the number of new BBL additions I've made because those types of buyers rarely BIN making it impossible for me to check their histories. Most have outed themselves and their histories in their offers or contact/questions. That's one of the main reasons why I have a B.O. option in my listings!

The buyer is showing a lack of respect because they consider the lowering the price to be a sign of weakness.  Not kindness.

Lowering a item price is not a sign of kindness or of weakness.

Lowering or not lowering a item price is a business decision.

IMO dealing with " bums" is simply a cost of doing business

I'm not the one who is rude here. Calling buyer's bums because they want to negotiate a better deal is VERY rude. Yes, some buyers are not ideal and some are downright nasty to sellers. I think it's very backwards to call potential buyers bums simply because they want to negotiate a better DEAL. Sellers here are doing it all the time to acquire inventory.

It's not like the potential buyer insulted the OP's mother and kicked the OP's dog too. They simply tried negotiating a better deal for themselves.  It's QUITE rude to resort to name calling because you didn't get your way. Downright childish and makes one question the intelligence of the insulter. This is business. No one cares about your feelings.

All these transactions are AT WILL of both the BUYER and the SELLER.

You either do not understand this, or do not care to accept this. I can explain it to you buy I can't understand it for you. Read this carefully please, or don't, I don't care anymore ... I'll write this for everyone else.

I AM NOT CALLING BUYERS WHO NEGOTIATE OR MAKE OFFERS BUMS

I am calling someone who does not honor their negotiations/deals/agreements BUMS. This buyer, made me an offer, I agreed to it "verbally" (messages), and then 5 seconds later the buyer tries to re-negotiate by making a LOWER offer. That is someone who is acting like a bum and wasting peoples time.

By all means, negotiate and make offers and try to get the best deal. That is the art of business. But at the same time, honor your deals and don't re-neg. If that's how you do business, good for you. That's not how most people do business.

Your posts say more about you than they say about me.

@rashidtoor

Thank you for asking! I think you're the first to ever ask!

I'm a chemist! So at 3 am one night in August '22 I came up with the name "Coins & Alchemy" because I'm a "chemist turned alchemist" and I turn all of my coins into "gold"! I thought it was cute and I was sick of seeing "____'s Rare Coins" and "___'s Coin Shop" because they are all the same types of names. I figured this would differentiate me while adding something light humor and fun and not be serious, pompous & snobbish name.

Absolutely agree with you, 100%, I deal with them by adding them to my BBL. Very simple.

It may be a challenge, and a headache, it's the cost of doing business.

I posted this because, as some may not realize, I was trying to point out this is a pattern of behavior I've been seeing more lately. I've seen this from 3-4 different buyers in the past few months. I wanted to both vent, and see others' takes and experiences on this. Mostly to vent if I'm being honest, I have no shame in admitting that (shocker to those who just make assumptions about people).

I got some serious responses from some serious people, and some not so serious responses from others...

It's all part of the cost of posting on here. LOL

Too late to edit, but just wanted to note, I'm not saying those names are directly pompous or snobbish, but some create names/atmospheres/personas in their store that come off as very prestigious pompous and snobbish. Just not my style.

I've actually read some disgusting store descriptions that I rather not go into detail about... one was written in such a way as to sound extremely prestigious and all about top notch service while making some fairly sexual references and innuendos as well... It was extremely awkward and uncomfortable to read... This was also a long time and well established family owned business... Not just a joe-shmo creep online...
