Does anyone know the basic switch over point where FedEx would be cheaper than USPS?
Also with the Dim weight coming, is there a major jump point in price/weight that jumps out?
Hope the questions made sense, still on first cup of coffee. Thanks

FedEx is much cheaper on larger heavier items.
Smart post with FedEx isn't recommended but ground and home delivery 99% of the time delivers in 2-5 Business days 1 Business day approximately per 500 miles
Sometimes if it's with-in the state it delivers in less than 24 hours.
We would use them even if they are more $$ because they have easily reachable CSR'S (never more than 5 minute's for a human) signatures are available on line with delivery disputes (save me $$ with Paypal on one) turning packages around or changing an address or arranging a p/u at a near-by FedEx Office can all be done with a simple phone call.
Have had drivers call me when they've had problems delivering asking for suggestions on how best to proceed.
They have accountability and strict policies on handling packages, someone i know that works there told me they have what's called "hand to ground policy" when handling packages, hand must be on package until it is touching the ground, violation results in write-ups or firings.
The person that delivers your packages and how and when it arrives is critical part of this biz.
My experience with hundreds of deliveries.

When you feel like having all your items broken and ruined on their way to your customer.

Yeah, not to say the USPS is perfect in their treatment of packages, but they've never matched the things my eyes have seen from Fed Ex and UPS. Like the time I ordered a vacuum cleaner and it arrived with the outer box soaked through . . . as in the cardboard was disintegrating from sopping up so much water--and the delivery guy casually said "Oh yeah, some tree branches tore through the roof of the truck and it's raining" like it was no big deal.
Since my order was a vacuum cleaner it was fine, but I pity anyone who had a less water-proof order on that truck.

Most of my items are on the smaller side, but anytime I do have a larger item to list I compare all three and choose the one with the lowest price. I have accounts at both Fedex and UPS and ship using them (yes, the rates are discounted). I would never, never, NEVER allow Ebay to be the party of record when it comes to shipping an item.

I have never had any issues using Fedex SmartPost although it usually only saves me money on larger heavier packages crossing many zones which of course you can not know until you have a buyer. I list all larger packages as going via Fedex SmartPost and then I compare pricing once packed up and weighed. I also note in my listings that due to the advent of zone pricing I reserve the right to switch carriers. Nobody complains if I "upgrade" to USPS Priority as Fedex SmartPost is much slower. This way you always get the least expensive option.

I've used FedEx SmartPost when it appeared to be cheaper than USPS here on eBay. Then later, I get hit with a surcharge (they have the ability to bill you more at a later date), so USPS would have been cheaper.
