I come here for ideas, opinions, etc.
I suspect most of us do.
I usually give advice, good advice IF I give it at all.
Sometimes I don't tell.
The reason I hesitate is because ... 'why should I help my competition'?
I saw a response here, in another thread where the OP complained about poor sales.
Many gave a lot of good advice.
One gave VERY good advice and I thought "why did he say that? in a public posting?" I might have answered in a PM ... but he broadcast a major tip over the unprotected air.
When EVERYONE is doing the same thing, it has less affect? Right?
If everybody did these magic tricks (that took my years to arrive at) because somebody spent two minutes explaining it ... just doesn't seem right to me.
Why would someone give away trade secrets? TO THE PUBLIC.
Remember when Promoted first came out? And two thirds were saying "I'm not paying 2% just to ger a couple of sales." And, those of us who DID pay 2% doubled sales? Remember those days? THEN a few of us just HAD to blab .... now, it doesn't work so good. We gotta pay more for the same bang. Know why? Guess.
If you want to tell a friend or associate a hack ... do it.
But, please, PLEASE do not broadcast it over the airwaves.

I know guys that end up in 20 different states a year sourcing their inventory. I know groups of people that are listing out hundreds of items a day. I just don't worry about anything beyond take the picture and then put it in a box when it sells. you'll either sink or swim but it's fair.

@adamcartwright wrote:But remember, you're the guy (or gal) who advised someone here to get a vasectomy in a discussion about slow sales.
So I guess we all have our own standards when giving advice.
No, no. Come on now ... if you're going to quote me please do so accurately.
He was complaining about not being able to support his children based on the income that eBay was providing.
I suggested birth control.
It's available on Ebay. Not used though.

@selsa84 wrote:Why would someone help someone? It's called community. Wow. Btw you don't get to tell people not to broadcast a helpful hack! That's what this is for.
I didn't 'tell' anyone to do anything.
I'm not a person of any authority here.
I brought up questions ... points of discussion.
And, isn't THAT what this place is for?
If you don't want to discuss it .. then don't.
I didn't intend to trigger you, or anyone.
Peace.

@dbfolks166mt wrote:You are talking $$s, @inhawaii was talking the number of transactions and his numbers were correct.
https://www.bigcommerce.com/blog/ebay-marketplace-statistics/
Part of the problem with the referenced statistics is there is no clear definition of what constitutes a "transaction" it definitely does not equate to individual item sales.
Alright then feel free to post the stats that work for you. With that said that doesn't make what @inhawaii incorrect, it only means you prefer to find a different stat that is more clear for you. I respect that.
I don't have a different set of stats but I read the eBay quarterly reports and can do some basic math. What @inhawaii is stating is incorrect or at least misstated in the following.
"2 billion sales per day."
The referenced stats refer to "transactions" not sales. There is no clear explanation of what a transaction is and the referenced data is from 2018.

2 billion transactions per day, on eBay...
That's 50 sales and 1,999,999,950 remorse returns 😂😂

I want everybody to know that @chariot_badges has a kind side AND has just given me some advice that I believe I will try.
In return, I will not have any kids.

I'm not usually into back and forth, but because you claimed I didn't quote you accurately... 😉
Copy and paste your 8/13/24 comment on movieman630's 8/11/24 post about fluctuating sales.
If you're looking for advice ... I think I can help.
Have you considered birth control?
How many children do you want/need?
If you have your fill ... a vasectomy may help. It takes the decision away from others, and it doesn't require memory or equipment ... relatively painless (MUCH less pain that a baby).
Consider it."

Another piece of advice ... you spend too much time keeping logs of posts on this thread. Do you catalog them too? Is it more important for you to be right? or make money?
ANYway. I was referring to context. I didn't make that clear. The context of my 'advice' was because he was complaining about not being able to support a family on what eBay pays. I don't believe that is his big problem. The big problem is ... making more kids than you can support.
And I suggested a solution to THAT problem.
And now, lets end this by me admitting defeat:
You are right.
I am wrong.
I'm sorry dear.
Oh, I slipped into "good wife' territory there for a minute.

All unnecessary condescending / passive aggressive word choices.
All of this is a personal decision for each of us to make. If you don't want to be helpful to others, then it is your right to not be helpful. If one makes or chooses to be rude, condescending, confrontational or sarcastic, that is their choice to make. As to why someone would choose that path instead of one trying to be helpful is a deeper reason that no one here needs to know about. But I'd say if that is all you have to offer or is willing to offer, why are would they post on the threads. Entertainment maybe. Or some other reason unknown to many of us.

No, I don't keep a log. But there is a search function in this forum.
In the spirit of this thread, I'll now pass on some valuable advice of my own: When you accuse someone of misquoting you, know that it can take literally seconds to pull up your original quote.
