What should I do?

Hi

I'm a new seller on eBay. Recently I had my very first return of an electronic item. TLDR it's a computer chip that requires basic IT skills and other components. He agreed he will buy something else in order to fully verify the chip is in good condition. Now it's been 3 weeks the return is still open. I tried to reach out to the buyer but still no response. Should I accept the return? Do I contact eBay?

Basically the buyer just left the return open and hasn't done anything. My money is still on hold with ebay.

If they have a return open, did you provide a shipping label?

If you did, and they opened the return its on them to return it or cancel if not needed.

You don't need to do anything.  Once its past its waiting time, it gets closed, they don't get a refund, and you keep your funds.

Comes down to how they opened the return.  If it was for the item not matching description or photos, you have to pay to return it.  If they opened it for another reason, it depends on your return options you set on that item.  For example, if you have it set for them to pay to return its on them.  If you have no returns, you don't have to accept it at all, but that is a decision you can make.  If eBay isn't asking you to do anything after that much time, then its waiting on them.  The ball would be in their court so to speak.

If they send it back, refund it once you get it.

@er_762520  once the buyer opens the return, the seller has to approve it and depending on the reason for the return, either the buyer or seller pays for the return shipping label. if u don't approve the return, the buyer will be able to keep the item plus get a refund from ebay who will then charge your account.

Well I have no returns on the item. They opened the return as "item not as described"

April 23 was the date either party can escalate it to Ebay.
I basically have 2 options in front of me;
Accept Return
Or Ask ebay to step in

Do I do nothing and just wait it out? There's no date showing when this will close

Thank you

IN that case.

Accept the return, have it returned, then refund the item after you get it back. If its a low cost item, you can just choose to refund and let them keep it.

Do NOT ask eBay to step in, you will lose in that case.

The only reason it has gone this long, is because neither of you have escalated it.  If they do, or you do, that changes.  And you don't want the buyer to be the one escalating, as you get put on the hook for sure.

So I must accept the return? Because we agreed to wait and see if his new components arrive before he test the product.

Accept the return. That should send the buyer a Return label that he will have to use within a certain period of time (not sure how many days). If he does not respond with the return before his deadline then you should get your refund.

Do NOT ask Ebay to step in as they will usually enforce a refund to the buyer. If the buyer asks Ebay to step in at this point they may do that for him anyway. Accept the return.

You can.  That way you are covered.  They can still work out their issues, but that then gives them a deadline to work out the issue or send it back.

But you want to cover your rear.

They can still not send it back and you will be fine after that.  Either way, you would be fine as you met your obligations as far as eBay is concerned.

Anytime a return gets escalated to eBay it often ends badly for the seller.

I have no problem with accepting the return. The only issue is the buyer sounded like he was hesitant if he actually wants to return it and have asked me to wait on him for a final verdict. So if it's been 3 weeks with a return open I just approve the return anyway and see if he sends it?

Yes, exactly.  Its been 3 weeks.  They only get a 30 day window.  You don't want them asking eBay to step in at the end for you.  This extends their return window too.  Its actually doing them a favor.

Just don't refund it right away, wait for it to be sent back first.  If its not, you are not out anything, even the shipping back.

I'd go ahead and accept the return and provide a shipping label, then see what the buyer does.

Ebay gives the buyer a little bit to get the item shipped back, so maybe they get the other items and it'll work and they won't have to return.

Have a great day.

Accept the return ASAP (or give a refund if you don't want it back). If he escalates the return it will end badly for you, there is a wealth of experience here that can tell you that this is an unwinnable situation if he escalates the return.

He might have already tested it and decided to keep it. Approving the return is still ok, if he doesn't return it you are not charged for the label. But if he escalates it, eBay will step in, you lose all your money and the item and have a defect strike to boot.

@er_762520

Even sellers with a No Return policy are required to process Return Requests when a buyer selects the reason that it is not as described.

STOP emailing your buyer.  Just leave them alone.

Accept the Request for Return and issue the return shipping label.  Then just wait.  Do NOTHING else but wait.  If they do not return the item in the next couple of weeks or so, the claim will close in your favor and you will not have to refund the buyer.  If the buyer actually returns the item, then you refund them at that time but not until you get the item back.

What should I do?

So you can better understand our options as sellers for the various return policies and what they mean.

The return policies options are as follows.

  1. No Returns
  2. 30 day returns w/ buyer pays shipping
  3. 60 day returns w/ buyer pays shipping
  4. 30 day returns w/ seller pays shipping, AKA Free Returns
  5. 60 day returns w/ seller pays shipping. AKA Free Returns
  6. 14 Day returns in certain categories

With option number 1, No Returns the seller can completely deny taking a return for a Buyer's Remorse Return Request.  Or if they want to, they can accept the return and have the buyer pay the return shipping.  If the seller so chooses, they can withhold the original shipping if it was separately stated on the listing [not free shipping] when it is time to refund the buyer.

On options 2 & 3 the buyer is responsible for the return shipping on a Buyer's Remorse Return.  Plus, if the seller so chooses, they can withhold the original shipping if it was separately stated on the listing [not free shipping] when it is time to refund the buyer. As of October 1st 2019, sellers that are TRS have some additional protections as well as they can issue partial refunds if they use options 4 or 5 as their return policy.

On options 4 & 5 above, they are also known as Free Returns.  If a seller that has either of those policies, they will pay the return shipping even on a buyer's remorse return.  A seller can withhold the original shipping value from the refund if the shipping was separately stated in the listing [not free shipping].  Also, Seller’s offering options 4 or 5 have the ability to do partial refunds in certain cases if the item arrives back damaged, missing something or in a condition less than what it was sent to the buyer in, see the policy for more details, the link is below.  In the cases where a deduction in the refund is taken due to damage or other authorized reasons for a partial refund, Ebay will protect the seller from negative or neutral feedback.

ALL OPTIONS [1, 2, 3, 4 and 5] are required to process SNAD claims without exception.  Even if they are improperly filed and should have been a Buyer’s Remorse claim.

All return policies by sellers must meet or exceed what is stated in the Money Back Guarantee Policy!

14 day return policies are allowed in certain categories: Jewelry & Watches, Collectibles & Art, Cameras & Photo and Medical, Mobility & Disability Equipment.

For those with Free Return and/or TRS members with 30 day return policies, there are some added protection benefits, one of which is the ability to do a discounted refund under certain conditions.
