What's going on with this pending payment?

I have an awaiting payment on two coins I sent an invoice for. If I try to send another invoice it lets me do that. I've combined shipping.

The buyer has told me twice he paid, and sent me a screen shot of his phone that shows the two coins to be paid for, and that payment is pending. Supposedly he paid an hour ago.

What's going on with his payment? He's hoping I'll ship his coins tomorrow.

"A lot of buyers don't  understand about how checks are processed these days."

Checks are used often in business here in the US.

But a buyer writing a check these days has to assume the recipient is going to scan and process it right then!

What's going on with this pending payment?

His payment from the bank didn't go through, and he said he was going to try and make payment again tonight, but I still haven't received anything.

I've advised him to send any screen shots if he believes the payment is sent and that I would "contact eBay" (read post in this forum and ask here), to try and figure out what's going on. He doesn't seem to know why the payment won't go through. I suggested he contact his bank. Banks have been known to block a payment if they're concerned, at least they do in Canada.

I did assure him I'd hold his coins and not to worry about the payment deadline eBay is suggesting applies, because I don't have my auto-cancel enabled.

@lacemaker3

I'm not sure what happened, but the payment was rejected, he tried again tonight and it didn't work, but he did something a few minutes ago to make it go through. I got the notification 1 minute after he told me he completed the payment and all should be good.

Looks like if they pay by eCheck and it's pending, the seller knows nothing and sees nothing until it's approved. I had told him he should call his bank, that might be what he did, he didn't tell me details.

Anyway I hope this answers your question about eChecks, let me know if you want to find out anything else.

OK, so maybe the buyer realized that the echeck wasn't going to be paid, so they cancelled it and paid with another payment source. That could explain what the buyer said. There could be other explanations, of course, but no way to tell for sure.

That's good to know that the seller can't even see when an echeck is pending.

I'm glad this ended well for you.

I find in these situations it's usually a misunderstanding of some sort, and I try to work with the buyer to sort it out. I make it pretty clear that until *I* am paid, there's no shipping. I point out eBay won't even provide me with their address or let me print postage until I've received payment.

I'd think most scammers are smart enough to figure out someone with high feedback knows how eBay works and will know if they've been paid a lot. The scams usually are run on new accounts because the scammer thinks the new member will believe verbage like "your payment will show up when you ship" and stuff like that. Veteran sellers know that's not how it works.
