My understanding is that ebay takes roughly 12.9% in fees. If that’s the case, why am I seeing 21% consistently taken from my account for sales? My account has always been in good standing.

These are buy it now listings with shipping costs paid by the buyer.

Does ebay keep the listing’s shipping cost and allow me to print labels from that fund? If so, do they keep the difference if a shipping label costs less than a buyer paid?

Where does this 21% go? Or rather, where does the extra 8% on top of ebay’s 12.9% fees go?

Look in your recent transactions under Payments click on the transaction all deductions are noted for each transaction. Click on the order and scroll down to FEE DETAILS Fees are based on the total order

price of item+ Shipping (if any) +tax

EBAY fees based on (purchase price + shipping + sales tax) plus 30 cent handling charge.   Could be extra fee if international buyer or you promoted this item.

Payouts can be very confusing....EBAY "holds back" shipping money so there will be money available when you print labels.

After sale is made EBAY immediately deducts fees + shipping (shipping is held for you) and balance is deposited into your checking account.

The $69 figures has the shipping added to it. The $54 figures is what you get, after the shipping is deducted from $69.

Buyer sends the shipping $ to you, you in turn buy it the shipping through eBay and use those finds received from buyer that eBay now has. Keep in mind that eBay gets its fees from the selling cost+shipping+buyers tax rate.

Could it be your shipping label?  The extra $5.56 deducted sounds like a first class label price.  If you used eBay shipping, unless you have it set up otherwise they deduct the label from your current payout balance.

The $69.28 paid by the buyer includes the item price + shipping + sales tax for buyer's state.

12.9% plus $.30 is taken from $69.28 = $9.24

Also deducted from the payment is the sales tax which will be remitted to the buyer's state which must be $5.28.

So $69.28 - $9.24 - $5.28 = $54.76

You are charged 12.9% on the total, which is the item cost, shipping & handling and sales tax.  If you're not considering the fee includes shipping and tax then 21% is correct on that item.

If you have free shipping and ship to a state with no sales tax then the fee is 12.9%.

Well eBay charges you for the shipping fees. The buyer if you charged for shipping: you receive that. a complication in taxes in me state: so I whet with free shipping ( the seller always pays in the long run.)

As for what is going on it is the total; minus fees: minus tax if any  (only if you go by the amount the buyer paid on the item details:) minus shipping if you use eBay's shipping,  so that is what you end up with:

Details> The final value fees are charged on Final value of item: plus, tax if any; plus shipping: and then calculated:

Note there may be an international fee charged if the user purchasing in not in country even though shipped in country:

So If you pay for shipping from eBay that also is deducted. (minus).

Learn the fees and the why of cost on eBay to calculate if you can sell an item and make a buck.

( NOTE: my dyslexic is bad today) ......

If you desire the total payed to you through eBay go to the item details page fists: it shows the tax collected by eBay.

So this of course does not show any listing cost (may be or not): or promotions costs may or may not be:

the item cost to you: (no way eBay knows what this is.)

So I would advise a accounting of all the costs involved per individual item.

This allows you to see what it cost you and what money you are making...

Manged payments, an eBay accounting does not easily allow you to do such but it can be done.

Manged payment  records were it is good for eBay not the seller: it has improved if one can believe it: (credit where credit is due.)

Use of this can tell you what you need to charge to make money over your cost of item.

It is variable due to a lot of factors. Yet an average of profit per item can easily allow you a mark up times to make it were you make money using eBay,

Of course if you are listing a group of items this can tell you what not to list if loss happens.

Hope this mess is readable and you can understand what is I am trying to get across;

And I have not lately stated the rule of sales on the internet:

Rule no. 1:

If you can not afford to lose item and all moneys payed for it: do not list it on the Internets...
