What is the rule about contacting seller before leaving negative feedback?

I haven't been selling much for a while...haven't gotten negative feedback in about 6 years.  A buyer just gave me a negative on a Barbie doll. Shouldn't she contact the seller (me) first before leaving a negative? I would have gladly worked it out with her.   I sent her a message about it.  As a buyer...if I am not happy...I contact seller and return or work something out.  Only if the seller isn't cooperative would I leave a negative.

Aaaaaand the strong arm tactic worked.  Buyer got her post sale discount and didn't have to return the doll. Your fixation with perfect feedback just cost you $25.

Positive reinforcement:  when a behavior is encouraged by rewards.

So unfortunately, other sellers will get negged and buyer will expect a discount in exchange for revising the feedback.

@mustardjo If indeed the feedback was intended for another seller, wouldn't an honest buyer have paid you back?

I also wish there was a rule. I sold a very nice book to someone. I remember it being in terrific shape, but I listed it as "Good", which is the 4th lowest out of 5 total options. I do not remember any problems with the end pages. It could have been "Very Good" or even "Like New" but I purposely undergrade books so as not to cause any difference of opinion.

The buyer left a bad review and said I sent out a book with torn endpages. I don't think the book had torn end pages. I remember it being pristine, never read. The buyer never contacted me. I would have been happy to offer a refund. I even contacted him and offered a refund but he did not repsond. I checked other feedback and he seems to be in the habit of bad mouthing sellers without first contacting them to work out the issue.
