I don't understand eBay's obsession with Black Friday this spring...don't they understand that Black Friday is in November? There's another 'Black Friday' sale out now. Just saw this on the homepage:

It would of been nicer if the discount applied to all sellers & most categories.

I did not log on those days, but I am sure many others did.
Hi Emerald,
I am sure they did...but I was not aware that ebay was hosting a special sales event linked to those days...if so I would have never shopped either out of respect to my many Jewish friends.

But that is the thing. Why the need?
Could you imagined if the world stopped every time someone considered a day a special event?
Do you conduct business Friday nights and Saturdays until sun down - no driving a car, writing with a pen, turning on lights, driving, etc.

So Sorry Emerald but I think that you are missing my point and for that I truly apologize.
What I am trying to say, and I also try to live by, is in regards to taking a Holy Day and purposefully turning it into a capitalistic, money making day.
Let use a cultural example rather than a religious one:
How would folks react to a Black Friday Sept 11th day...probably about the same.
Hope this helps remove the sensitivity of the Christian context of this weekend.

You mean like Christmas?
03-31-2018 06:02 PM
Absolutely, although it isn't a remembrance of someones gruesome death...but rather their birth... and the original context of the wise men bearing gifts seems to have given capitalism an excuse to market this tradition, I still abhor the commercialization of Christmas.

I am a practicing Buddhist. I have friends who are Christian, Hindu, Muslim, and Jewish,* all of whom have endless religious holidays we and they observe. Then I have my atheist friends who celebrate all the Hallmark holidays. While I love all these people equally, if I respected all their holidays by not shopping, I'd never get anything purchased.
*Apologies if I left anyone out. Shinto, maybe?

So Sorry...seems folks are not understanding...I am talking about what the OP started...taking a Holy Religious Day...very important in America and turning it int a Black Friday.
So far I am not aware of any of the other faiths having their Holy and or Sacred days...and by the way we are only talking about 2 here in regards to Christians...being turned into a marketing sales day CAPITALIZING on the Religious event.

Yes, your interpretation of it. But what about others who feel that Christmas has become too commercialized, and instead of shopping people should be in Church not opening up packages.
So what if someone says, shopping is disrespectful to the holiday and should no longer be allowed.
What I am basically saying Mr C is the world is comprised of different people of different religions. All you can do is stay true to yourself, but you cannot dictate to others.
If this situation makes you uncomfortable log off until Monday but you cannot expect the world to stop to accommodate every single person.

I’m thinking of donating to goodwill. That’s all

Hi Emerald,
You grant me too much credit...thinking there are closer to 500,000,000 celebrating this weekend and I am sure I am not the only person with these thoughts or beliefs.
I do think if someone is open minded to follow my train of thought they will find it solid and consistent.
Just because I have tried to be articulate and responsive to this serious post doesn't mean I am at all looking to convert/convince or ever sway anyone...that would be silly...but not speaking clearly on why this would also bother me and so many others would also be a disservice.
I feel that if anyone else would want to understand more clearly my thoughts on this they are welcome to PM me...since I think I don't need to encourage any dissent since it isn't my desire especially to you Emerald who you know I respect highly.

Mr. C:
With all respect due to your Christian faith, I don't perceive eBay as capitalizing on Easter the way you do. I don't see them advertising, "Hey! Celebrate the crucifixation with a new lawn mower!" I think you're reading too much into the timing of the discount coupon. In fact, eBay makes NO mention of the religious events being celebrated by Christians this weekend.
Think of it this way, Mr. C. My guess is you don't even know when any of my religion's holy days are, so you aren't even aware you are disrespecting Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs or Muslims on any given day. We have to put up with slights like this all year long. Try to develop a thicker skin and learn to forgive and show compassion for people who don't toe your religious line--just like we do every day. Welcome to the club.
That being said, I'm surprised to read your description of these Easter-related Christian holy days as "a remembrance of someones gruesome death... " I thought Easter was a joyous holiday about rebirth. Guess I got that wrong.

Oh wait, it IS!!!

well black friday...was just a term for being "in the black" due to increase in sales/profit.
so this is a spring black friday...so suppose to be a positive thing for all of us.....
AND it makes you read it..and maybe talk more about it...thus a good marketing idea.

@luckythewinnerwrote:Black Friday is another name for Good Friday - they are using this as a play on words and trying to invent a new shopping holiday.
They're not trying to invent one... from someone who just worked B&M retail for the past two days, I can assure you that it already IS one.
