I noticed when viewing one of my listings the word SPONSORED is denoted above.
I thought sellers had to pay extra for that service, or am I wrong?
I have never used sponsored service.

Sponsored is a term eBay uses when sellers uses Promoted listings.

I also thought Sponsored meant promoted listings but the OP says they have never paid extra so I take that to mean they don't do any promotions.

If you don't want to promote you can manage or end your ad campaigns here:

They OP is saying they DON'T promote but for some reason one of their listings shows as 'Sponsored' in search results.
In other words they're not asking for help, they have stumbled on a mystery and are seeking possible explanations.

Promoted listings are called sponsored when seen in other seller's listings, which is what I understand the OP is talking about. Seeing other sellers Sponsored listings in their listings.

The OP Said "I have never used sponsored service." Which means Promoted.

They also said they see "sponsored" on one of their listings. I believe that was the reason they posted here.
That is why I gave them the link which will not only answer the question of whether they have any promoted listings but allow them to rectify the situation if they inadvertently promoted some listings.
Have a nice summer.

No, they said "when viewing one of my listings the word Sponsored is denoted above." So I'm picturing seeing one of their (own) listings in a sponsored module like this:
