What does the number in parentheses after a bid mean

Is it a long number? Item number?

I am not quite sure what you mean but I think it is the number of bids on the item.

If that number goes up, that means there has been another bid placed.

Can you post a screenshot of what you’re seeing?

Can you please give us a little more to go on--screen shot?  Are you bidding, is it in search, is it an item you are selling?   I looked around my ebay at an item I have with a bid and I didn't see anything.
