What determines the TYPE of feedback buyers are asked to comment on?

A few days ago I purchased a couple of Airtag collars for my cats, and I did the shopping with 'avoiding a dropshipper' as one of my criteria, even above 'price'.  Today the package arrived, and sure enough it's clearly from a real eBay seller who had the items on-hand and packed them herself, very tenderly and with a thank-you card and invoice, and shipped fast, from the actual location cited in the listing.  The collars are really nice too, but I specifically wanted to praise the seller.  So I was disappointed to find that the feedback comment prompt was for the item, with all the suggested 'relevance' factors pertaining to that (including 'Condition' -seriously?  for a NEW item?).

Of course you can still write whatever you want, but those suggested prompts are there for a reason.  The more of them you 'check off' in your comment, the higher it will go in the results sorted by relevance.  So if you really want future shoppers to know some great (or awful) things about the seller OR item, you have to aim for the AI's understanding.

------------------------------

Whereas, I could say a thousand nice things (er, up to 500 characters) about the seller and my experience....

Oh and by the way, if the seller was horrible, selecting 'Negative' doesn't change the criteria either.  The prompts are still about the item.. So if the seller didn't ship for several days, then cancelled the order, then wrote nasty stuff in message replies, etc., they are also treated as "irrelevant" criticisms.

But here's what I don't understand.  -What determines whether the buyer is prompted to describe the item (essentially an item "review") or their experience (essentially seller feedback)?  I might have assumed the former is for new items and the latter is for used.  But nope, here's the feedback prompt for a brand new clothing item I purchased.

So if it's not new vs. used, then what is it????  Item category?

Yeah exactly.  Why would a comment that addresses only one relevancy criteria be shown as MOST relevant, let alone 6 identical ones.  -I thought one of the goals of the new(ish) relevancy sorting was to break up the uniformity of comments, make more unique one stand out.

The only thing I can guess is that buyer was actually given the experience version, which their comments do apply to all 4:

Re: What determines the TYPE of feedback buyers are asked to comment on?

Are they doing some sort of A/B type testing?

Kind of off topic...  I have two Ebays, this one and my clothes one. I hardly ever get feedback with the clothes but most leave feedback on my hard goods.

I now wonder if its presented differently. LOL

Bottom line no news is good news but its a night and day difference with each account.

Ah, missed that. So did you ever reply with the "experience" version you had or did you lose it?

@gurlcat

I just wanted to commend you on purchasing air tags for your babies. We are dealing with a local residents lost dog here since 7/4 and it's 113* out.

Kudos for you!

Ebay AI is horrible. Now, everytime an item ends, I get "Time to relist" e-mail from Ebay. It is totally stupid.

Thanks @gurlcat for posting this.  I was wondering about this the other day when I left feedback for a seller. I wonder if that is the reason for less feedback.  People don't want to go through all those steps just to say they liked their purchase.

I've been lucky to get seasoned buyers who are already used to the feedback system.  I was wondering why everyone was describing the item in their feedback.  Just thought they really liked the item....lol...Now I know.

No unfortunately it was just that one time before I accidentally closed the tab, then like you it didn't reappear with several attempts afterward.  I still haven't used it, keeping it open for now.  For science.  🤓

What does "113* out" mean?  EDIT: Never mind, OF COURSE as soon as I hit 'Post' I figured it out.  🤣  -You meant 113F (degrees).
I haven't actually purchased Airtags to put in these collars yet.  They're not very expensive (definitely worth it if they work!), but I decided to get the collars first, for a couple reasons:
1. To see if they appear well-made enough to safely carry around these not-expensive-but-not-cheap devices.  -Yeah I think they'd be good for it.
2. To see if both my cats could handle wearing a collar.  -One I already knew could; he seems to ENJOY it, ha.     But the other ..... not so much.  After I put it on her last night, she started panicking.  And even though I thought I shortened the length to be plenty snug, she managed to get her lower jaw under the edge and snagged her teeth deeply in the fabric.  I had to act fast but tenderly, to avoid breaking her teeth or her whole jaw.  -The supposed "easy breakaway" thing DID NOT WORK.  Then as soon as I got the collar off, she zoomed off the chair and out the pet door. -That would have been so much worse if she still had her jaw trapped in it, then who knows where she might have dashed off to outside.  So I'm going to to try some more "collar practice" in short timespans, to see if she can get used to the sensation.
